Pardon this really stupid question from a converged newbie. I got my 6600 2 days ago, immdiately turned on voice service and rep set me up for data service. I still can't get internet connection on EVDO network as device keeps trying to connect via dial-up using default CDMA settings. Under connectivity and modem settings there is nothing appropriate. Manuals and Help are no help at all on this. Asked rep, no answer yet. Is there something I need to do configuration-wise or is it just that there are inherent delays in set-up of data service as opposed to voice? Thanks!
First of all, make sure that EVDO is available in your area. Then call VZW and check to ensure that they have turned on the proper services for your account to allow EVDO. I have had nothing but good luck with my EVDO service, but it took a few calls to VZW to get my account set up properly for it.

Same here...the PDA plan only covers unlimited 1xRTT service, not EV-DO. Call Tech/Data support (not Customer Service) and advise that you cannot force the phone into 1xRTT mode and live in an EV-DO area (if that's the case) which makes your PDA plan useless. Hopefully you'll get someone helpful who is familiar with the issue and will do the right thing.
Don't go through normal Customer Service...they will say you must take the $79.99 plan to get access to EV-DO which is NOT the case.

1. Does it have a little EV on top of your today screen or 1X?
2. Did you do a *22899 ?
3. Under start, settings, connections, tap the connections icon, tap the "manage existing connections". What is listed? CDMA2000, or something like that? Click on it, make sure cellular line is selected as the modem, click next, make sure #777 is the number, click next, yourtendigitnumber@vzw3g.com is your user name and password is vzw (leave domain blank). Click finish.
NYC has EVDO as far as I know, so all that should work.

That's not my understanding at all. I have the PDA plan, and my rep told me that EVDO is covered. I'm in the greater Los Angeles area, so I don't have any issues with getting the EVDO signal. My understanding is that the PDA plan covers EVDO to the extent that it's being accessed via the PDA and not by a laptop via the PDA.

What does *22899 do?

Well, *22899 does several things, one of which is to update the PRL. It's the code that VZW's system uses to do over the air programming, as well as updating the PRL.
From a voice device, if you dial *228, you are given a voicemail menu; option 1 programs the phone OTA (puts in the directory number, system ID number, and home SID - "activating" the phone), and option 2 updates the PRL. *22899 does both these functions.

The PDA plan is not setup for EV-DO access. I realize that some reps are saying it's covered, but at this time, it's not. If you check the VZW site, it states the PDA plan is for unlimited NationalAccess usage. There is a separate option for EV-DO. I imagine as EV-DO gets rolled out across more areas, it'll be encompassed in that plan.

My unit is always connected to the EVDO network here in Atlanta (speed tested 300 kbps down/60 up) and I'm paying $45 like almost everyone else.....maybe you are the exception?
Wait a minute, wasn't there a thread (maybe on HoFo, but I can't seem to find it now) about how VZW had no way to force the phone to ONLY use 1xRRT, therefore, for those in an EVDO area, they got EVDO by default with thier data plan?

I'm writing this from my device, it reads EV at the top of the screen, and my connection is fast. My PDA plan covers EVDO. Also, if you read the fine print on the PDA/Blackerry data plan detail screen, you'll clearly see that it says "National Access/Broadband Access". Broadband Access=EVDO. Could be you're getting information specific to your area, which might not be an EVDO area, but I assure you that it works in Irvine, CA and it's covered in my unlimited PDA plan.

I'm not trying to be difficult or abrasive and believe me, I'm listening to what you're saying. My own internal contact (I'm a VZ employee) and two Tech Support people have confirmed that the PDA plan (which is separate from the BlackBerry plan) does not include EV-DO at this time. The feature code must be activated in order for you to use it and as of two weeks ago, this feature code was not a default part of the PDA plan.
The fine print you are referring to only states some of the TOS associated with National Access and BroadBand Access. Specifically, that you can't run servers or stream data. As I've said in previous posts, it's quite possible that VZW recognizes the issue and has made changes.
When I had my v710, I read alot of misinformation in forums and I think that made my situation worse while trying to get my v710 fixed. I, and am pretty sure alot of other users, have had the experience of being told one thing by one rep, something completely different by another, and then something in the middle by a third person. All I'm trying to do is get the correct information out there. If it's changed and VZW hasn't updated their site, which is possible, then I apologize.

Originally posted by hatoncat Uh, no. If the account is provisioned for EV-DO, it will connect, if it isn't it will fall back to 1xRTT during the connection process.
That said, many 1xRTT/NA/EN billing codes did have EV-DO added to them so that Verizon could cover their bases...
This is partially incorrect for the XV6600...I went through this personally.
I live in an area that has both EV-DO and 1xRTT. When my phone was initially provisioned with the PDA plan, any attempts to connect to EV-DO resulted in a bad username/password area. Even though the 1xRTT was also available, the phone did not automatically switch.
A tech support rep and I tried various ways to force the phone into 1xRTT...didn't work. He later called me and said that the EV-DO feature code was not on my account and we would add it at no charge since I couldn't connect to NationalAccess in BroadBandAccess areas (ie. force the phone to use 1xRTT).
Once that feature code was added, never encountered the user name/password error again. It wasn't human error because I've been using NationalAccess for 3 years, the login and TN are the same for NationalAccess as it is for BBA.

I have a sinking suspicion EV-DO is based on what market you're in. The two vzw rep's I've spoke to have consistantly said EV-DO is included with the PDA plan. I flat out asked them, and their response was it's added free of charge to the PDA plan once you order.

I just spoke with the rep that I got my Audiovox from, and she verified that, in fact, EVDO is included with the PDA plan, PROVIDED that EVDO is available in the home calling area. So we're all correct. Let's all move on with our lives now

I initiated this thread and my original problem is now resolved. The vzw tech support folks had to change settings for my account, and once I logged in my EVDO connection was up and available. The problem was on the set-up at vzw end.
As for the $45 PDA plan and EVDO, I am using EVDO and am only paying $45. I asked this question of the rep and I was told that the $45 data plan includes unlimited data use on EVDO or 1X connection. I love the phone so far and the EVDO network works, is incredibly fast. I am stunned at the speeds I'm getting. Someone sent me a 20 page word document and I received it in seconds and opened it, something I would never have tried before.
As much as I love it if it turns out the EVDO unlimited access is $79 I'll return the phone and blast verizon for giving out bad info.
Thanks to everyone that reponsed to my original question.
