Originally posted by qcomdrj Here is my issue. When I run wmodem.exe, it shuts off phone capabilities, which I am fine with. I turn off USB activesync. Computer doesn't find a USB modem. No matter what I do. Is there something minor that I am missing? I followed Ehud's site, trying to get it to work. This is all just for fun, since I have broadband at home, but I would rather get it to work here before going someplace I need it. Anybody else having trouble getting the laptop to recognize the modem?
I noticed the instructions for WModem were written by a chinese guy and not edited. Here are the steps I took:
1. Copy the 3 files that came with your CD unto a directory in your desktop drive c:
2. Start wmodem on the ppc6600/6601 before you set it in the cradle.
3. set the unit in the cradle. Your computer should see it as a USB modem and offer to install. Tell it to use ppc660o & ppc6601 usb wmodem as its driver.
4. Run ppc660 & ppc6601 usb wmodem dialer.exe from your desktop
Now you're connected. Start your desktop browser.
Note: the dialer will not work if your laptop/desktop is connected to the internet via a network adapter (ethernet or wireless). I had to remove my 54g card from the laptop to make it go to the wmodem dialer
Anyone have this working on a laptop with a Cisco VPN client (or any other, for that matter)?... I am really not trying to bypass their usage rules and prices, I just want to have the phone/PDA AND laptop access in one package... Note that I am not trying to get a client for the 6600 itself, but for the computer and have it tunnel it all through the PDA. Now and then, I really need to connect with the computer..
I want to get some warm fuzzy on this prior to commiting.
I have recently bought a vx6600 in order to use it as a modem for my laptop. Unfortunately I am having a very difficult time doing this.
I have WMODEM installed on my vx6600. I am using a usb connection to my laptop.
I have tried disabling the usb connectin in activesync and then starting wmodem (usb mode) Then I tried using the CDMA wireless dialer. Unfortunately the wireless dialer is not recognizing the modem.
Can anyone help me set this whole thing up correct.
did windows find the modem when you first installed it. I have found removing the USB stuff and then having windows re-discover it works well for me. I think I basically uninstalled the USB root hubs in device manager and then clicked the button to search for new hardware....it then found everything correctly.
my boss bought two of these vx6600 for us to use at work and for personal use. we followed all the instructions here (awesome btw thx !) and everything works perfect on the first phone we did. the second phone it works but i have to manually go into flight mode then turn it off and try to connect wmodem. his works fine , when you press and hold end call his EVDO turns off. mine wont no matter how long a press the button .. its almost as if the wmodem is there , but the OS isnt seeing it .. it wont even show up in my recently used list in the start menu. any suggestions ?
i am fairly new to this entire PDA thing , sorry for the newb questions .. i have lots of ?'s reguarding the full power of this PDA , but ill read on a bit before asking .. thanks in advance ..

I am getting 450k down and about 50k up. Very consistent connections and bandwidth.
Surfing experience is very good. About as good as any other hi speed connection. Latency is reasonable if a bit high and pages load fast. Downloads are good. VPN is great.
All in all its been better than some DSL connections I've used so I am very pleased.

That's impressive. The uplink seems too slow. Perhaps a tweak test on DSLReports.com can help. But the downlink is blazing for a PDA connection.
I wonder why my DUN speed is nowhere near my Vision throughput. I set up my WModem correctly, I think.
I agree. I wish more people would post their dslreports speed. I do not have the XV6600, but I would purchase it in a heartbeat if I knew it would give me the same kind of speeds as my 5220 pc evdo card. I just did a test on dslreports for my verizon 5220 pc card and I got 904k download and 101k up.
Verizon said I could switch from my pc card data only to the xv6600 (all I would have to do is pay full retail for the phone, which I would gladly do) and they even said the data charge for unlimited on the pda with a voice plan is 44.99 extra. I am paying 79.99. So it's less expensive. However, I think I am going to keep my aircard unless someone else gets better scores. The speeds that people are getting with this xv6600 seem to be half of what I get, but I know all of this depends on your location and signal strength. Which leads me to believe that the internal antenna on the xv6600 may be cosmetically savvy, but could hinder its reception. I lose an entire bar of signal strength if the antenna is flat on the pc5220 card. However, it doesn't seem to hinder the speed. I just did another test with the antenna down and I got 859k down and 108k up. Not really that big of a difference. This was the California Speakeasy site from dslreports.
These speedchecks don't seem to be that accurate. I just did megapath from dslreports with the antenna up and it gave me 232k down and 104up. Then I did it again, and I got 554k down and 104up. Seems like the up is the only thing that is accurate. Maybe the evdo isn't consistent. I don't really know.
I guess the only way to know is to go buy a xv6600 and compare it side by side. Hmmm, I could just go to verizon's store tomorrow and test theirs. duh, why didnt i think of that before. That is what I will do I will go there with my pc5220 and test my computer there and then test their display that they have. It's a working evdo xv6600 model.
Well, it won't give me the speed for the laptop, so I guess this won't tell me what I need to know either. UGH Any ideas!?
I agree, more people should post their speed. I'm in Connecticut btw, and it's only been here since January 1st, so most people aren't using evdo here compared to places like nyc where people are more corporate business minded.

I downloaded the XV6600 user manual off the audiovox website and page 11 has a picture of the back of the pda with an arrow to a hole in the back where it says "Car Antenna Connector". It then says "if available, you can attach your phone to its antenna and utilize its superior reception quality". This could improve the speed of the evdo connection, but I wonder why they would say "IF AVAILABLE"...I mean were they not sure if they were going to make an external antenna.
Does anybody know where I could buy this external antenna?

I would keep the card....I'm in Atlanta GA and I don't get anywhere near 900K....my tests usually come back between 450 - 580 down. Not sure why it's that way, but it is......wish I could get the speeds you are getting.
I think I will do just that...keep my 5220 card, but I am also thinking about getting the XV6600. I am very confused as to the price of the unlimited internet access evdo plan for the phone. Can someone tell me what they are paying for their evdo on this phone?
I am paying 79.99 a month for my pc card, but they tell me it is $44.99 a month for the evdo on the XV6600 if you have a voice plan with the phone.
And then I got 10 different other prices on the phone and in the store. The one I got most often is $44.99. Is this the price for evdo on the pda phone.
400 to 500k is plenty fast enough for that price! IMO
DOES ANYBODY KNOW THE COST for evdo access on the xv6600???
Supposedly, it is the pda price of 44.99 with voice plan or $49.99 without voice plan.

I read somewhere that there will be two new pda phones coming out that work with evdo in march. An XV6600 replacement that has a camera. Does anybody know if it has anything more than a camera...such as wifi.
Also, the Samsung i730 (I think that is the right number)...does anybody know the main different. It seems like the only difference is that the samsung has wifi and the xv6600 doesn't.

I use EVDO for BT dialup, USB dialup, etc and I am also in The Atlanta market. I was able to get 700K several times depending on where I am and in Alpharetta I get it everytime.
BT gets slower speeds than USB (FYI). You can explore the device and configure/connect the BT dialup service on the XV6600 from your laptop using the same login, etc as you used for USB.
FWIW, I got much better speed over USB when I changed the max speed of the USB modem properties. Not just the setting and status showed the speed change, I had noticably faster user experience.
Hmmm, I have gone from completely dazed and confused to just...well, I don't know.
Anyway, it looks like someone here is saying that he is getting 700k constantly in an Atlanta suburb. I'm assuming this is through USB. I was wondering what you get through bluetooth. I had read somewhere that BT was closer to 150 to 200k...but this is just one persons post. Do you know the speeds that you get with bluetooth when connecting to your laptop? What are you using to figure out the speed?
Also, I downloaded the manual to the XV6600 and there is an "optional external antenna" that plugs into the back of the phone (there's a rubber plug that covers it). My thought is one possible reason that the XV6600 gets a lower speed than my PC5220 is because of the antenna being internal. I know I get a better speed when my antenna is up than when it is down flat. Here's a link to an external evdo antenna. HAS ANYBODY USED THIS OR ANY OTHER EXTERNAL ANTENNA!?
Also, how long does it take to connect your evdo phone to your laptop? Any annoying quirks...such as if you lose the signal, do you have to go through several steps to reconnect or does everything seem to work smoothly. I ask this because my pc5220 is pretty easy. I use to use AT&T EDGE with the 555 aircard and it was a nightmare with all the disconnects and the annoying steps to connect. The PC5220 doesn't have this...if I lose my signal, then it reconnects automatically.
Just wondering. I use my evdo a lot, and I probably won't get the answers until I just purchase one, but if someone wants to answer these questions then I'd really appreciate it. I imagine I am not the only one that wants to know.
