Is the pop up keyboard from landscape mode w-i-d-e-r than the slide out mechanical keyboard, since it's in portrait mode?
Nope, it is the same width, just centered at the bottom.
I've still not seen a 6601 because they're still not well stocked around here. If its mechanical keyboard has problems, could a person use the keyboard in the screen, since they're about the same size?
There are reports of people having issues with the keyboard but they seem by far to be the minority. The law of averages would probably prove to be pretty accurate here.
You usually hear two things about the keyboard:
1) Well Built and solid
1) Losens over time but locks into place just fine. (I find this more of a benefit because it makes one handed operation easier)
Yes there are several ways to enter data, includeding a software keyboard. I talk in detail about this in a review I posted here:
Has anyone found a way to fix the looseness of the sliding keyboard? Mine is getting loose to the point that it is wiggling while im holding the phone up to my ear to talk.
xx, you should know better by now... "Search" is your friend
But, to summarize what has worked best for me: two pieces of electrical tape, about 1 inch long, on the back of slider (when extended, its the back of the screen). The bottom piece goes horizontally, between the two vertical ridges, over the top of the one horizontal, thin ridge. The second piece goes over the first, but further down toward the SD slot, so the two pieces together create a ramp of sorts. Mine is now tighter to open than when I first got it, and stays put better also.
My buddy did this too, except he stuck with one piece of tape. To him that had the best feel.
I've heard (but never tried) that you can pop off the battery and tighten it from the other side. Make sure your backup battery is fully charged first, so it doesn't hard reset the device. I would recommend a backup as well before trying this.

I just popped my battery off and don't see anything that I could tighten...?
Does anyone else have the slideout keypad not work about half the time? I will go into an email to respond and the keypad will not respond. After a soft reset I am back in business.

Thoughts?
I've had that happen a few times with one of my 6600's. I had a problem with the screen on that one so it went back for a replacement.

I have had the keyboard randomly quit on me. The way I fix it is by hitting the power/sleep button, close the slider, hit the sleep button again and slide the keyboard out. I found this method after I got tired of resetting and realized it worked once I woke it up again.
Icalled Verizon when mine became loose. They told me it shouldn't be that way and replaced the device. There is a hinge that can become disconnected. Might be worth a try.
there is a great fix for this but you must take your phone apart! Its rather easy, good luck and enjoy. This seems to be a very common problem.

here is the best instructions...
The i730's slide feels VERY different. It's a smooth slide and feels as if it "locks" in place after sliding out. It actually slides easier than the 6600 out of the box, but only time will tell how it "ages." My hunch is that the i730's slide will be better over time; it is definitely better out of the box.
