Nope, it is the same width, just centered at the bottom.

Is the keyboard options on the PPC really that much narrower than what's on the blackberry?
It is not narrower, just different. There are actually more options on the 6600 since you can also use the stylus to enter data (in addition to the keyboard.)
I love the idea and the easy use of the keyboard (once you get use to it). But, within a few months many will be complaining how LOOSE the keyboard has become and how it has scrathed the surface of the 6600 because of its sliding up and down. The design/idea was bad to add a a peice of plastic to each side of the bottom keyboard. I believe the plastic "tabs" are there to keep the top away for the bottom part. The problem is that althought it's plastic it still scratches the bottom surface of the 6600 causing it to look cheap and old. I know because I use mine ALOT and it already is loose and scrathced.
The good news is that when the keyboards start to lossen up we can just and some BLACK tape between the screws on the back of the screen (when the screen is up). Depending how loose the screen has become we will have to add two pieces, one on top of the other. I have done this already and works GREAT. Now the 6600 does not pull up everytime I try to use without the need of the keyboard. Or when I use thunderhawk (btw, what's going on with TH that it hangs so much with this 6600???).
So yes the looseness will not be much of a problem (at least for me because with the right tape it LOCKS it in place very nicely). BUT, the scratches it leaves behind I am not happy at all because you cannot "touch it up" as it were. I just received my replacement and I'm afraid to start opening and using the keyboard. I will be adding some car wax or something so as to make the plastic tabs on the sides SLIDE better with no friction.
Anyone have any thought on this or have you started to experience looseness and scratches?
After 2 weeks of using this i can say that yes the keyboard does seem to be a little loose when i have the phone out of the case, but using it with the Piel Frama case i notice little looseness at all. The keyboard is pretty small, but its qwerty and after using it for a little while you get used to it.

I've only played with it a little, but I have noticed that as well. I was wondering if it had to do with EVDO. (Are you using it?) You may want to send TH an email. If I noticed it consistently, I will do the same.
I wish I had evdo, so no I'm not using it. I did email th bt the want me to do some steps that I don't have time for. I hope they will fix it soon or else I will have to cancel my account. the same goes with evdo here in chicago. If they don't come out with it soon I will cancel the data plan and buy a sd wifi.
I've had a PDA2K, Siemens SX66, and now a VX6600.....the slider on the VX6600 is much easier to slide up and down than either of my two previous devices......should I be worried about it?
Originally posted by t_sqaured two different responses, gotta love it! Really the only people that can answer are those that have had both the PDA2K/SX66 and the VX6600.....
I had both the Siemens and the Audiovox on Sunday. I had purchased the Siemens from Cingular on Saturday, then bought the Audiovox from Verizon on Sunday when I heard it was in stock in Irvine, CA. The Siemens went back Sunday evening. My experience with the keyboards on the two devices was exactly the opposite of yours. The keyboard on the Siemens was shockingly loose, while the keyboard on the Audiovox is tight. Both were straight out of the box brand new when I bought them, so I know that they were not messed with by curious hands. It's likely not anything to worry about until it gets so loose that it becomes a pain in the arse.
I think I'm going to hold off while the rest of you vigorously test the durability of the slider for me there's just no way I could live with getting stuck with a lose keyboard on this device. I'm still debating between an imate JAM/XDA mini on Cingular or the VX6600 on Verizon. Keyboard + EV-DO is excellent, but if the keyboard sucks I just couldn't live with the device.
no no no, the keyboard is fine.......I think it just varies per unit how stiff or loose the slider is I think....I've had 3 different units and they were all different.....I personally don't think its a big deal and actually over time they slider does become more loose (wear and tear).......

I fully expect that. What I'm curious to see is what HTC expected when they designed the sliding mechanism. I'm going to be using it very, very often in my day to day use and if it wears down in three months, I'm not going to be pleased at all. The life span of my "converged" devices is averaging a little less than a year; so at the very least the slider has to last that long, if not longer.
My 6600 has scratched the bottom where the keys of the keyboard are and it's only been a few days. AND the screen does not match up to the bottom part of the 6600. It goes down to far after I slide the keyboard down. It leaves a gap which is frustrating for a device this expensive.
Am I the only one that has scratches from the keyboard? You guys must have them but you just don't want to look/admit it?
Considering the cost of this thing, and a serious hope that I could get at least a year of use, this thread is pretty darn scary. Just looking at this thing, the serious question is how well will the keyboard hold up - scratches, looseness, falling out of position, not lining up - these are serious issues.
Is there a way to guage how common this really is? So far most people on this board are pretty upbeat about their device (compared to Treo 650 for instance.) Yet if most people saw this scratching and such it seems unlikely there would be this much happiness. Is this really just an abaration?
I'm by no means going to pay $700 for a device that looks like crap in 3 months.
My PDA2K showed the "scratches" that you were talking about after about a month of use.......luckily this time with the VX6600 I have a piel frama case and it protects that area!
I have had 3 units of the Audiovox PPC-6601 and each one had a different snugness to it, but each of them were solid. I use the keyboard alot and none of them even showed scratches on the back either.
For the vast majority of all the forums I frequent, the response has been "solid", "well built", etc... when asked about the keyboard.
The law of averages will prove to hold true with some keyboard problems, but as a whole I really do think it is solid. Remember this phone is not new....just new the USA. The PDA2K has been out for over a year now, so it has already proved the test of time.

I guess I am just one of the fortunate. I don't have a problem with my 6601. I have had it for over a month and though it has loosened a bit (and I mean a TINY bit), it is not a problem.
I also don't have the scratches. I know, it boggles the mind
Anyway, as far as protection, I use a screen protector and put it in my pants pocket, so I am not treating it extra special. I am careful not to drop it though.
That would be bad
