Question PLEASE help with my XV6600 software update/upgrade

Hello,

I am new to this forum & a first time owner of a Pocket PC. I bought the audiovox xv6600 & I'm trying to figure out how to update/upgrade from my current software. I notice everywhere that WM5 & WM6 is available & also see things about a different ROM?

I'm trying to update my themes & such, but notice alot of them require WM5 or higher like Mobile shell 2.0. I've seen xv6600's with iPhone themes & such so I'm ASSuming it must be possible? Also do I do updates/upgrades straight from my phone or thru a my home computer on a SD card?

I'm really sorry for all the ?'s & my lack of knowledge, but I'm truelly new to this. Please don't respond with hate I'm just looking for help from good people. The world is in enough trouble to treat each other like crap on here.

My phone settings list the following:

Windows mobile 2003 2nd edition version 4.21.1088 (build 14132)

ROM version: 1.36.00 WWE
ROM date: 01/13/05
Radio version: HA01_151
Protocol version: AA3.3.301
PRL version: 51020
ExtROM version: 1.36.116 WWE
Hardware version: 0041
Browser version: MSIE 6.0

Thanks so much for any help!

Hello and welcome DENNISJR60,

The latest ROM available for your device is:
ROM: 2.07.00 WWE
Radio: HA01_167
Extended ROM: 2.07.117
Assuming you have the camera version of the phone and can be found: http://www.utstar.com/pcd/downloads/...structions.zip

The WM6 ROMs you see are for GSM phones (Cingular, T-Mobile, ect) and will not work on your device.

We're stuck with WM2003SE and unfortunately we can't use a lot of the new applications, but you can get by with the ones that are already available. There's a lot that this phone can do. The only things this phone can't do is SDHC and Youtube/Flash stuff. The remedy is a 4 GB non-SDHC card and downloading videos to your memory card.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for the reply. So WM5 is out of the ? too from reading your post right? Yes you are correct in assuming I have the camera version so my question is do I use the link you provided thru my phone or put it on a SD card from my home computer & do it that way somehow?

All i really want to do is change my theme or whatever it's called to the iPhone theme or something that is more now & today. I've seen many xv6600's with the iPhone theme so I know it can be done. I just have to figure this stuff out somehow.

One last thing what exactly is ROM & ExtRom etc..?

Sorry for the stupid ?'s & once again THX!

Hey there!

Your questions are normal and understandable - there's a lot to absorb here.

Our device was first released back in December of 2004, so it's over three years old now. It runs Windows Mobile 2003SE - prior versions included WM2003 (not SE), 2002, and 2000. Microsoft eventually changed to straight numerics, so the next versions of the mobile platform software were referred to as WM5 and WM6, respectively.

Our mobile devices can't be upgraded in the same manner as a home computer. The software that we have is provided by the original manaufacturer (in this case, Auviovox/UTStarcom/HTC), and that software (WM2003SE) is further specified to the device in question based on it's hardware (screen, network/provider, modem type, etc). This is the ROM - each ROM is unique to it's phone, though phones/PDA's in the same family might share the majority of a ROM's code (for instance, the Verizon XV6600 WOC (without camera), and the XV6600 (with camera) are practically identical).

Based on what you've posted, your ROM is one of, if not the first, ROMs that were available for this device. You can upgrade your device utilizing the instructions in the link that sonikvoom provided above. ROM updates must be done through your home computer, via the cradle and an ActiveSync connection. Follow the directions *carefully*, and you'll be fine. I, like you, just recently had the older ROM, and the upgrade was painless.

Also, note that while you can't browse to the YouTube site natively to watch video's, there is a fantastic solution called YTPocket that allows you to view and download any video on YouTube! Just do a search for YTPOCKET.

Finally, themes are abundant out there, and I can only imagine that someone has created an iPhone theme for our device. Keep in mind that it may look like the iPhone interface, but it may not act the same way (that whole finger-flick thng).

Good luck!

Gare_NY

Thanks for the response. But I can't let you off the hook without some more questions!

So I will have to set up the activesync on my home computer which is probably on a disc in the box with instructions somewhere.

Ok now as far as putting new themes or features on my phone like weather, calculaters etc do I do it on my phone or thru my home computer? I currently have a trial version of spb pocket plus on my phone that I loaded from my phone which was pretty easy, but what about other sites that offer stuff? Do the sites give links I enter on my phone or do I hit the download button from my home PC & put it on a SD card or something? If that's the case how do I do that?

Here's a link for the iPhone theme I was talking about just incase you're curious.

Hello Again,

There are two ways of installing applications on your device.

1. Through your PC with Active Sync. There are programs that have an .exe ending and are to be installed through your PC. You double click on them and they walk you through a setup process.

2. From your PDA. There are CAB files that you can place anywhere on your phone or storage card. They have a .CAB extension and they have to be built specifically for Windows CE devices (Meaning WM2003SE or earlier) and most of them are with the exeption of newer modifications and hacks for WM5 or WM6. When you open the programs install themselves.

It is always good practice to do a soft reset when installing new programs. That means you hit the reset button at the bottom with the stylus and NOTHIGN else.

Here comes the tricky part about the SD card, you INSTALL the programs either on the phone or the SD card. If you have a SD Card and run a lot of programs that require a lot of space, it's best to install them there. That way you leave all of the memory on the phone available for RUNNING the programs instead of STORING them.

As far as were you install the programs, usually there is a promp that asks you were you want to install them through Active Sync before you install them. As far as CAB files I can't say for sure. Gare_NY might know if it depends where you place the CAB file or if they just install on a default place. Good questions though.

PS: You can always download Active Sync 4.5 from the Microsoft website if you're running XP or Mobile Center if you're running Vista. Don't use an ealier version of Active Sync if you're going to update the ROM on the phone.

Oh right, thanks - I'd forgot to mention that he can download ActiveSync from Microsoft's site. The one on your disk is out of date by now.

CAB files are basically like self-extracting/installing ZIP files on your PC. They behave in much the same way as installing PocketPC apps via ActiveSync, in that they will sometimes (but not always) ask where you want to install the program.

Keep in mind that sometimes, when you are offered a choice of installation location, and you choose the SD card - the app might not work. Some apps seem to require that they be installed on the device themselves. The only way to really know is to install the app to the SD card, and see if it works.

And of course (obviously) - if you install an app to the SD card.. that SD card must be inserted into the device for it to work.

I'm on the road all the time, so I almost always install from a CAB file. Note that most programs/download-sites will offer you the choice of downloading the .EXE version of a program or the .CAB version. Some however, do not.

Before anything though, install the ROM update. Any ROM upgrade will effectively 'reformat' your device, so any installed third-party programs will be wiped out. I apologize for not mentioning that sooner.

Ok the first thing I will do is download the activesync update & go from there. When I do update with the sbp pocket plus will I lose my contacts? I really don't want to retype ALL of them again so how can I avoid this?

THX!

There's should be a xback program under your programs that will let you back up your contacts and events. Make sure you choose the SD card and not the STORAGE as your destination.

After your done flashing your device, you should restore your contacts with the xbackup utility from the SD card.

You can knock yourself out trying all of the SBP Stuff. I only use the SPB time for alarms because SBP Pocket Plus, Voice Command, and my GPS software don't get along.

Sprite Backup for our device does the same thing as SPB Pocket Plus minus the soft reset button and tabs for the programs.

There's a lot of other people that have gone through similar stuff here and if you have questions specific to some software doing a search the Forum will give you a lot more insight then just a couple of us

ok guys I did the ROM update & it seems to have went well. I forgot to save my contacts so I had to enter them all over again. I also put the google maps on there & it's pretty cool.

I really wish i could load mobile shell 2.0, but I guess our phones can't use it? I want my phone to look just like that & I'll be VERY happy. I like how the time is big & it shows missed calls & texts. The way the phone is right now that all sucks.

Thanks for the help up to this point.

Sorry to hear about the contacts... What I do about applications that I like is that I look for previous versions that will work with wm2003se. See if you can find a previous version of SPB mobile shell. It may have some of the features you want, but you might have to do some digging.

I had to look hard for acrobat reader 1.0 for ppc because I was having problems withe the newer versions.

If you like google maps... you'll love Live Search. If you can get your hands on a bluetooth GPS receiver, you'll have a decent navigation system.

I've just taken my XV6600 out of retirement after two years of non-use.

I just stumbled across this thread, unfortunately the flash update is a dead link.

Does anyone have a good link for that flash update?

TIA

Gary
