Sprint to Update Mogul with Rev-A and GPS

I received notification from Sprint Public Relations yesterday that they had an important announcement to make regarding issues with the Spring Mogul PPC-6800, and they asked if it would be possible for me to post it here. There announcment is essentially an apology for the Mogul problems, and a plan to fix them plus add additional capabilities... something that very few carriers have ever done with a PDAPhone.

They indicate that Sprint and HTC are aware of problems created by ROM version 2.16.651.0, and that Sprint and HTC are currently testing a new ROM to fix the problems. They plan for this ROM to be available by the end of November for download at http://www.america.htc.com/support/m...-download.html . In the interim, customers may download the older version 2.09.651.3 from this link and restore the Mogul to its previous version.

That is all great, and corrects the problems that the ROM update caused, but the bigger news here is that HTS is currently developing a separate ROM update that enables EV-DO Rev. A and enables the built-in GPS. Sprint and HTC plan to make this ROM update available early in 1Q08. They even included a thank you for the customers that reported the problem to them.

This is great news if they deliver what they are saying, because in the past most PDAPhones are never really treated as computers that can be upgraded. They get rolled out, and then forgotten. Perhaps Sprint is realizing that PDAPhone owners expect more and wish to exploit all that their hardware can do.

enabling just another service they can charge us for isn't exactly a kind thing sprint is doing...it's just another way to increase their profits.

If this is the case, that they will finally unlock the GPS hardware, I will be happy. I already have a data plan that includes GPS, just no hardware to utilize it. I was considering purchasing an external one, just to be able to get all that I can out of my Mogul and my plan.

Aw, come on now....the pricing for GPS with Sprint and VZW is really reasonable!! It would be great to have a true free GPS so in Europe (or anywhere) one could use Google maps etc., but as to buying CoPilot 7, there's a price to pay at first...quite a large one really.
Roger
p.s. I can see why VZW delayed its XV6800 so long. To clear up issues that the Mogul, its sister model has had. The salespeople say that like with Sprint, VZW will most likely have VZ Navigator enabled by Jan-Feb.
