i700 to get Windows Mobile for Pocket PC 2003 Upgrade!!

I received an official announcement this evening from a Samsung press contact informing me that Verizon Wireless users of the Samsung i700 Pocket PC phone WILL be getting the Windows Mobile for Pocket PC 2003 upgrade soon. Exact details are not available at this time, but will be announced in the near future.

What is the big motivation behind Windows Mobile 2003? I know its nice to have it, but it really isn't that much of an upgrade. A lot of folks hear have been reaching near panic over the thought that it might not be available. I'd much rather see a GPS cable, than Mobile 2003. It will be nice to have it, but I have never seen it as a show stopper... a lot of folks have though.

Here's a five page review that does a good job of explaining the WM2003 upgrade:

http://www.pocketpccity.com/articles/2003/6/2003-6-25-Review-Windows-Mobile.html

For me the big thing is shown on page 3 of this review. It shows that the upgrade will provide good access to Outlook Web Access (OWA) email. Currently with PPC 2002 and it's PIE I cannot login to my company email OWA account.

It will depend on the individual whether the upgrade will provide them with something they need but are currently lacking.

Samsung i700 Verizon -- Pocket PC 2003?

Did I miss something? Or are we STILL waiting for the PC 2003 upgrade?

Also, when I tried to follow the link to the PR announcement concerning the upgrade (this link appears in the first post of this thread) the announcement is nowhere to be found. Was the board administrator asked to remove it?

Yeah I thought I heard that you guys would be getting the upgrade right after us G1000 users got it .

I think the only way you'll be getting the upgrade is if you buy the Audiovox 5050.

i700 upgrade

Here's an excerpt from an email I received from vzw customer service:

"Verizon Wireless and Samsung are working toward a solution that should be available in the timeframe of the first few months of 2004. At that time there will an upgrade to the i700's operating system to Pocket PC 2003 Phone Edition. "

I've owned a Dell Axim with PPC 2003, and an i700 with PPC 2002, and there's quite a difference in usability improvements with 2003. Looking forward to it for my i700....

Will there be a 2004 update?

Reading this forum sporadically, it seems that the canned message from Vzw customer service has been around for about a year or more, almost with the same verbiage.

VZW doesn't have the i700 on its page any more. Have others found it at stores recently?

i700 availability

I haven't been in a store recently, but I just checked their products page on the website and it's still there.

PPC 2003

If Verizon/Samsung decide NOT to release PPC 2003 for the i700, they're going to hear from me. (not that they care one bit,
Before I purchased the i700 in December 03, I placed phone calls to both Samsung and Verizon and was ASSURED that there would be an upgrade to PPC 2003. That was the only reason I bought the i700 was because PPC2003 offers the ActiveSync "push" technology. I also have two emails stowed safely in my Outlook stating from Verizon reps that there WILL be an upgrade to 2003. I have to think that after feeding us this for so long that they would be at least slightly hesitant to get egg on their face over it. But I'm probably naive at best... I can tell you that if Verizon just gives us loyal i700 owners the shaft, I will GLADLY pay the $175 early term. fee from Verizon and buy the Audiovox 5050 (and a 2 year contract) from Sprint. I'll recoup the early term. fee because Sprint's data plans are so much cheaper anyway!
