Sunnysoft Plus! for Pocket PC Phone Edition Available

Sunnysoft Plus! Is a pack of modules, which extend the functions of devices with Pocket PC Phone Edition, e.g. XDA, MDA, SX56 etc. The modules are:

SMS Name - this utility assigns a name from Contacts database to number of an incoming text message.

Today Module - Shows missed calls and unread text messages on the Today screen.

Call info Module - lucidly shows information about all calls.

Contacts Module - allows you to create and assign special rings (i.e. combination of volume, tone, vibration etc.) to a contact, contacts category or to a particular telephone number.

I haven't had a chance to try this yet, but it looks like a nice collection of enhancements to the total Phone Edition experience. Please post your experience here when you get a chance to try it.

You can check out this product at PocketGear.

I can't believe a phone this expensive doesn't have all the features other regular phones have by default.

Seriously...

Well, you have to remember that its essentially a Version 1.0 device. Microsoft historically has let 3rd party software developers fill holes in their products, then eventually fill the wholes in the OS themselves. So all of these products run the risk of being put out of business when Microsoft gets around to fixing the holes. It's no different than the life cycle of desktop Windows. Remember a company called Stacker? They had a great business until Microsoft incorporated the functionality into the OS. Hopefully, the software developers will be able to recoup their development costs before that happens. I suspect that won't be a problem.

Well, Stacker was way better then the thing included in windows... but no flames )

Ad software... I tried it a week ago and deleted immediately, it was doing strange things (like disabling sim toolkit on my SIM until phone (the GSM part) was restarted, my screen became garbled once a day (like if you set to high refresh rate on a monitor)), and it doesn't have any really useful features... SMS names can be downloaded for free, missed calls are always one click away as well as number of incoming SMSes...

Stacker

Sorry to stay off topic, but I had a motive for mentioning Stacker. If you recall the history, Microsoft put compression into the OS after Stacker became popular. Stacker filed suit against Microsoft over it, and won. I turned out that Microsoft had tried to license Stacker technology to include in the OS, but Stacker wouldn't sell it. So, it would seem that Microsoft just used it anyway. Microsoft took a run at developing their own, but it didn't work that well. In the end, Microsoft simply bought Stacker.... the whole company. I'm relying on my own memory for that story, but I think that's the way it went.

I don't recall it exactly either (I'm not as old ), but it was first named Doublespace, then Drivespace... I think Drivespace is Symantec's work.

If I buy this program today because I'm spoiled by the cheap phones, it'll be free next month with a upgrad!

I'm still upset because I can't find my favorite rap songs as .wav files Whose bright idea was it to use wavs instead of mp3s that are already stored in the pda?[/size]

MP3 rap music?

Are you aware that you can easily convert MP3 files to WAV files? MP3 Converter Directories has a whole list of programs to do this. I'm not sure you'd want an entire song being a ring tone. Usually ring tones are fairly short and repeat. I suppose it doesn't have to be that way, however. You might want to convert a good 5-10 second clip from your MP3 song to WAV for a ringtone. If you come up with any good ones, please post them to the Download area!

Troubles with Sunnysoft Plus!

To bring the thread back to Sunnysoft Plus! itself, having used the product, I must strongly recommend against it, for three reasons:

(a) Apart from the customized phone rings, it doesn't offer much additional functionality.

(b) It is incompatible with Agenda Fusion. Specifically, you cannot customize the rings from Fusion Contacts. You must instead use the Outlook Contacts, which is not easy if you have redirected the Outlook programs and menu items to Agenda Fusion.

(c) The biggest problem of all, though, is that the program refuses to be uninstalled. When I try to do so, my PocketPC hangs, with the color wheel rotating forever. It looks like I'm going to have to do a hard reset and laboriously reinstall my programs and redo my settings. I guess my Sunday afternoon just went bye-bye. Needless to say, this doesn't endear me to Sunnysoft. I wish I had never laid eyes upon it.

George
