Windows Mobile 2003 Upgrade for Samsung i600 and i700 Coming Monday!
After a very long wait and many delays, Verizon has readied the Windows Movile 2003 Operating System upgrade for the Samsung SCH-i700 PocketPC Phone and the SCH-i600 Smartphone. The release of the upgrade is being timed with the release of a new product offering called Wireless Sync 2.0, which offers among other features "Blackberry-style" push e-mail.
Verizon customers have two options for receiving the upgrade, they can take their phone into their local Verizon Wireless store and have a service tech perform the upgrade, or they can download a self-install from the web. This upgrade will be free until September 16th, after which a $15 fee will be charged.
Wireless Sync 2.0 will be availableas a free add-on to all customers with an additional data plan. Samsung has soft-launched the upgrade download available from their web site, but you will need a password in order to perform the upgrade. The address is http://developer.samsungwireless.com/upgrade/index.aspx You will need to register your i700 in order to download the files.

Windows Mobile 2003 Operating System for i600 and i700 Users
Samsung i600 Smartphones and i700 Pocket PC's are currently sold with a 2002 version of the Windows Mobile operating system. In order to use Wireless Sync 2.0, Always-Up-to-Date capability with Exchange 2003 servers, and ePIM, these devices must be upgraded to the 2003 version.
Devices in the warehouse and any additional devices sent from the manufacturer have already been upgraded with the 03 image. Devices currently in stores and ones that have already been sold should be upgraded using the procedures outlined in this document.
All Verizon Wireless customers with a Samsung i600 or i700 may download this operating system for free July 19, 2004 - September 16, 2004. Because there is a licensing fee charged by the manufacturer for this new operating system, effective September 17, 2004, the price for this download will be $15.00 for all customers. See the full M&P for instructions on upgrading the operating systems for existing i600 and i700 users.

I was able to get to the URL noted above and register my i700. I got to the tool and got the USB drivers, etc. However, the URL now seems to generate a 404 error...
I bet someone pulled the page because we were hitting it now instead of Monday...
I am a complete idiot. I can't find anywhere on verizon's site where to get this upgrade information. I checked both verizon.com and verizonwireless.com. Can you post the link to Verizon's upgrade site? Thanks!
thank you - I've also tried a number of times to install the MSN messanger upgrade for the i700 and I download it on my computer and have my i700 active sycn connected but never get prompts on my phone pda to follow to finish download... any suggestions... thanks so much
No, its legit... I finally got the download to work after a huge wait. My download finished at 2am this morning. I am going to do the upgrade later tonight probably...
Even though I've been using my i700 for 2 weeks (love it!), when I go to download the update it tells me that my ESN is not a valid Verizon ESN. I entered my 10 digit cell number and the 8 digit (starts with 3 as highlighted in yellow on the graphic) ESN. For kicks I've even entered the 11 (starts with 6) digit above and the 8 digit ESN with no luck.
Any ideas? Just call Verizon? Samsung?
BTW: I've also verified that even thought I bought the phone two weeks ago it has PDA version S:i700.06.V.WG02.12199
I thought I would pass this along. I called Verizon today about their system not recognizing my ESN so I could download the 2k3 update. After 20 minutes, and then an eventual callback (they really were good though), the tech reported that they were having problems with the whole rollout. She said that they were having problems with the system that does the validation. That was why it didn't recognize my ESN. She also said that even if I could get to the download that both Verizon and Samsung where getting reports of problems in the update itself. She didn't elaborate on what kind of problems, but she recommended that I wait a few weeks before trying to download the update again. Anyone heard anything else like this?

I went to the retailer today and was told they don't even have the cable to do the download for me. I just got the phone and it seems to be really good, but this part has been a nightmare. Are you still able to view email? I am getting error messages and I was hoping it was due to the older software.
I went into the local Verizon store to upgrade my i700. They actually crashed my unit to the point that even a hard reset would not restore it. They gave me a new unit that already had PPC 2003 on it. Had I flashed it myself I would have been SOL as I do not have insurance on it through their insurance carrier. I STRONGLY suggest taking your unit into a Verizon store and let them perform the upgrade (if you have one near you) so THEY are liable for your hardware should problems arise.
Okay - I found the answer to my question and I thought I'd post it in case anyone else get's stuck.
After you complete your OS upgrade to PPC 2003, the major difference will be your persistant Expressnet connection. This now makes Wireless Sync viable as a Blackberry replacement. You install monitor software on your office PC, which can connect to both your internal Notes or Exchange server and the internet. It pushes (and pulls) your mail up to a VZW web server, which then can send it to your handheld in real-time.
The Wireless Sync service also stores copies of your email and PIM info on a webserver for easy web-access without your handheld. Your PIM information (Contacts, calendar, etc..) will be accessible via the web as well and will always be in sync with your handheld.
I suppose many people that upgrade may begin looking at Wireless Sync for the first time (like I did). The link in the first posting in this thread doesn't work. You can register and download Wireless Sync for free (if you are an Expressnet user) at http://www.wirelesssync.vzw.com
The persistant internet connection on PPC2003 has been a blessing and a curse. My handheld becomes non-responsive for 30-60 second blocks, where it will not even respond to the power or backlight hard-keys. I'm not able to make a phone call without having to place the data link into "dormant mode" manually at times. And my battery life is significantly reduced. On the positive side, I can stay logged into AOL IM most of the time and receive IMs when idle (I use Agile Messenger - it's free).
As far as the new OS, network connection handling (i.e. connection profiles, vpns, dialups), popup messages, address lookups in "Inbox", and some Phone features are much improved.
I would like to hear some other people's experiences with the new OS.
I went to the vzwireless website to download the wm2k3 s/w and associated documentation to upgrade my i700. I was successful in getting everything but the updated user guide/manual. The link on their web page for the manual only pulled up the upgrade guide.
Does anybody have the updated user manual or a link to where to get it? I checked the Samsung site as well but they only have the old wm2k2 manual.
