New customers only - for now

I called AT&T and the cust service was very nice AND helpful once again, but they cannot send me a 4100 yet. Web site only and even there I cannot seem to buy it unless opening a new account.

I have bought a Verizon i700 used, waiting for it, and was going to switch because the MpX200 does NOT do 850mhz and was a giant step backward in reliability for me.

But the 4100 does 850 and has a fast processor and a great price. No hardware contacts/calender button (maybe its on the side?) and no bluetooth etc. But I can live with that for a year until something better comes along.

Also interesting is the CDMA PPC5050 but Verizon doesnt seem to carry it.

I was just transferred to national business and their "system is down" and they can use a "secondary system" that takes all my information but is not processed for 3-5 business days". It was hard to understand the rep through his accent, but this is what i gathered.

BOGUS BOGUS

Since ATTWS is not going to fix their problem on 1900MHz, I am considering to get the Audiovox instead. So I have the following questions:

1. Sorry about my ignorance, but I have never used anything from Audiovox before. How solid is this company and how reliable are their products? I like to hear from existing and former customers.

2. Does the PPC4100 support Bluetooth or 802.11? I can't find that on the specs.

Thank you very much.

do a search on google for ppc4100 and the specs are all over the place...

no bluetooth no wifi

but it IS a GSM850/1900 pda with a 400 mhz processor which makes it good enough for me to at least try

That's the reason why I'd give it a shot. But I'm with Cingular, so I'd have to see if it can be unlocked (probably), and know the non-serivce price, and so on...

Maybe in a couple of weeks we'll have some answers.

I am a newcomer to the forum. But i have just ordered the Audiovox from attwireless by phone. I paid $280.00 US$ + tax. I am expecting it by the end of the week. I currently own a SX56, but dont have good reception presumably because it only caters to 1900 MHz. I bought the 4100 primarily because it has coverage for 850 MHz also. Well let us see. if this doesnot work then I may have to give up on AT&T/Cingular.

If i am not mistaken the Audiovox PPC 4100 is the same as the AnexTek SP230, with some modifications (frequency, numeric keyboard flip cover). If somebody can confirm or correct this , pl. do so.

I am in the same boat. I am currently using the SX56 which is a great device except the recent drop on signal strength. I am planning to get the Audiovox PPC4100 as well.

Siemens re-branded the O2 XDA as their SX56. Apparently, Audiovox is doing the same thing. They are re-branding the AnexTek SP230 as their PPC4100.

And I just realized that AnexTek is a Taiwan company.... that makes me a little nervous. My previous experience with Taiwan products are that they are not very reliable and lack craftmanship.

But I will investigate a little more.

Most PDAs and PDAphones are now made in Taiwan or Korea. If you eliminate those , then there is very little choice. The XDA is clearly a mismatch for the service offered by At&T. Whether it is a quality or design problem i am not in a position to say.

I have one concern with the 4100 though. It has no native Bluetooth capability. One can get a SDIO card with BT to give it BT capability. However, for GPS applications you need to have access to large maps(size of 100 MB or more) which means you need an SD card for addiitional memory. How can one overcome that problem with only 1 slot for SD ? Are there Bluetooth SD cards with an additional 512 MB of memory ?

Not trying to sterotype, but Japanese and Korean firms are more quality-oriented than Taiwanese firms. But you never know, it might have changed. =)

I wish Samsung makes GSM pdaphones and sells to ATTWS. I definitely will buy it.

the XDA I was a dud right from day 1, although it performed as advertised as a PDA. AT&T should never have adopted this device as it was not suited for their bandwidth (850/1900). Presumably T Mobile customers are happier since their entire network is on 1900. Again the product was not suited for the AT&T network, and that is really the fault of AT&T rather than HTC, the maker of the device. IOW, the operation was successful but the patient died anyway.

Question Details on the $280 from AT&T

What were the circumstances of the $280.00 PPC4100 at ATT? The best price I can get from them on the phone, net, or store is $349 with new act. Just curious if there was some sort of special to get that price.

Thanks,

As far as I am aware there were no special circumstances. There was a special being advertised on the net for 299 (100 $ off) but i was told that it was for first time customers of ATTWS. Then she said she could only give me 50 $and that it would come to 279.99. I immediately realized i was deficient in math and placed the order faster than you could say 'PPC4100. Dont ask me how they arrived at the number. OTOH, they may have made a mistake and may have later corrected it. I will check with them tomorrow. I called 1-800-888-7600. which is the number i was given by the local ATT retail store.
I will say this , this would not be the first time where the right hand did not know what the left hand was doing.

Well, being a customer with them for over 10 years (like me) might help, I hope. Besides, I spent $600 for the SX56 for less than one year, so they pretty much owe me that.

Ditto. It may just as well be a silver brick now. Although it may work in India . 900 MHz is a frequency used in India by the GSM carriers.I managed to unlock the SIM, courtesy of xda developers forum.PDAphones are a novelty there and i may be able to recoup some of my losses.

The other factor that made me jump in was their 30 day return policy ( no questions asked). If in the meantime the HP 6315 arrives on the scene as the 'next big thing' I may ditch this. The HP is a quadband device (850/900/1800/1900)and will probably work almost everywhere in the world. I am also getting a quadband wireless modem for my laptop, so i can have access to the net during travel (other than the 4100). Of course now many airlines and airports offer internet access and WiFI hotspots are increasing day by day. But this way i have one less dependency on my environment.

Substring, you got the $280 deal as well? I don't have 10 years with them but have AT&T and first asked about getting the phone - best was $399 without new acct.

Oh no no no, I have not done that yet. I talked to ATTWS Customer Service, they said they cannot make any deal yet because they don't have the "inventory". They suppose to have that today or tomorrow. But they insinuate that they probably can give substantial discount because of my length of relationship and my $600 "Loss" in less than a year. I think the discount will be on case-by-case basis, and they definitely are not going to "advertise" it.
