Welcome to the newest addition to PocketPC phones! AT&T is now selling the Audiovox PPC 4100 on it's web site. It is available for $349 after rebate and activation.
900 MHz is a frequency used in India by the GSM carriers
kaushal, is India primarily on GSM? I know China is very big with CDMA now. That might influent the rest of Asia to jump on the bandwagon because of their political and economical might. Right?
I just called AGAIN and was transferred to some hard-to-talk-to foreign dude at 888-696-5433 and he started to take the order at $349, but kept sounding like it was new acct. I asked himn if it would go onto my existing acct, he said yes. Then he was asking my SS number, I said they already have it. He just didnt sound very sure of himself and so I just said cancel it and hung up.
He also INSISTED that I buy a data plan, $36 activation, total cost $395.
I'm sure these a-holes will probably ship me a phone anyway or otherwise screw up my account.
Verizon is getting closer and closer and closer. Maybe today I'll buy a i700.
I've been a customer WAYYYY to many years for this crap.

Are you aware that if you ask to speak with the supervisor, chances are you will be routed back to the States? It is pretty much SOP for most offshore call centers.
I dont know where they pick these guys from. As I said they are incredibly obtuse.

substring, I dont know how deeply they have penetrated in india, but they do have a substantial presence. The Bharti group runs AirTel ( i had a prepaid card and it worked wonderfullly. Even my SX56 had far better signal strength in India than it does in the US (@900 MHz). see for instance
which is why i prefer GSM/GPRS. CDMA is predominant only in the US (Qualcomm has a lot of clout in this country) and of course China has chosen CDMA. But i believe 70% of all cellular calls are now made on GSM worldwide.

gsm-at&t-user, you might want to check out the reception in your area before you commit yourself.
I work in a suburb in Dallas, Texas. I have very bad signal strength there with my SX56. Well, I thought it is just ATTWS. Yesterday, a colleague of mine showed me his brand new Samsung i700 from Verizon. It is a great device. But I noticed he has as bad signal strength as mine. So apparently, in some areas, you will have poor reception regardless you are on ATTWS or Verizon, on GSM or CDMA.
The Audiovox PPC 4100 is a POS! I live in Dallas, TX, bought one on Saturday and I'm already on my 3rd phone! I didn't even make it out the door with the first one! When I tried to make a call, and put the phone up to my head I got bad feedback. The second one was having serious lock up problems, which is what the third one is doing! It took 5 resets to make 1 phone call! I called Audiovox and they, of course have never heard of this, but the AT&T sales consultant at the store said the Audiovox rep. said there was an engineering problem and they would becoming out with an update in a couple of weeks, sounds almost like the XDA I saga all over again! Screw this! I'm taking it back, getting a Sony Erickson T616 and a Jabra bluetooth head set and telling Audiovox to keep there damn phone!
Tired of being R&D for wireless phone makers,

UPDATE
Called Audiovox again because we all know that you get a different answer each time you call. This time they said there is a problem called "SIM lock" where the phone locks up when a call is placed. The email sent out to the Customer Support Reps says to take down Name, Email address, and day time phone number, and they will be in touch.
I suggest you (and everybody else who bought the PPC 4100) to return the PPC 4100 and wait for about 3 months. HP is introducing the iPAQ 6315 which has everything built-in and has quad-band. T-Mobile will get it first in a few weeks and they will have exclusive for 3 months. After that, ATTWS will get that as well.
Good thing I am holding off on buying the PPC 4100. I will definitely wait for the iPAQ 6315.
You can always get the 6315 directly from a dealer without a 'simlock' (instead of a phone company) and insert your own ATTWS sim card. Of course you wont get any support from AT&T but that is not worth a hill of beans anyway.
The problem is the release date of the 6315 is still iffy and then there is the MPX coming down the pike ....but that could take another 6 months to hit the streets. There may also be a version of the ASUS a730 with a phone before the endof the year. Could be an exciting year before we end up in 2005.
my PPC 4100 is working great. I mean, its had a couple lockups, but i use it a lot, and as mp3 player etc. so far i am happy "enough" to keep it, i like the at&t plan i'm on and the early evenings. but the ipaq is more confidence inspiring though, with it would be here sooner. course, i could always sell the 4100 on ebay at that time.
but now this news of an "update"? is that software, firmware, or the phone itself?
I placed the order on June 8th and i still havent received it. I stopped calling the national business center, as nothing useful comes out of the conversation other than the 'order is complete'. If it does not arrive by the time they announce the MPX then clearly the choice is unambiguous. Apparently you get what you pay for - in this case not a whole lot.

I just got this today, 22 days after i placed the order. Have to charge it up first. I was able to make a call from wthin my house which i was never able to do with the SX56. It also connected to the internet
First observation , the cradle dock is hokey, I have to fumble a lot to get it right. The stylus fits very tightly in its scabbard and is hard to pull out. But these are secondary issues. will report on some of the technical stuff as i find the answers.
Keep in mind that you have about 30 days trial period. Of course it is up to you to decide, but I strongly recommend you to return it within the trial period.
In about 3 months, ATTWS will be able to sell the iPAQ 6315 which is a far more superior device..... quad-band and built-in everything. And HP is not going to quit on us or leave us hanging any time soon.
I also heard the rumor that ATTWS might sell the MPx as well. So why settle for the Audiovox PPC 4100 which is already discontinued from ATTWS?
my power plug into teh dock broke off and now i have made a wooden base to secure it all, including the broken power plug. lame.
but i like the unit, and the ipaq is reported to have only a 200mhz processor. my mpx200 was weak in that area and i didnt like it. i'll keep the ppc for now...
