On March 29th, 2004, Microsoft Corp announced that it is making available a "technology preview kit" for Windows CE version 5.0. This preview kit will be available on April 1st on the Microsoft Windows embedded web site.
One of the significant changes in this version of the OS is that it will include more than 50 drivers optimized for a variety of chip sets, including the ARM processor, MIPS processors, the SuperH processor from Hitachi Ltd, and Intel Corp.'s x86 family of chips. According to Microsoft, this will allow manufactures to use drivers straight out of box rather ahan having to customize them for a particular hardware environment.
The new release of Windows CE also provides built-in support for dual-mode mobile phones which can make high-speed data connections on both cellular and wireless LAN networks. The new software also includes increased support for voice-over-IP (VOIP) telephony.
Version 5.0 of Windows CE is due for release this Summer.
