T-Mobile Releases Windows Mobile 2003 Upgrade to Pocket PC Phone Edition

One of the misunderstandings that many people have about platform upgrades for pdaPhones is that they are no more complex that upgrading a PDA. Often when a new operating system is announced by Microsoft or PalmSource, the discussions become filled with questions of why the end user can't just upgrade it themselves.... and why the companies are taking so long. With pdaPhones, each device has a customized version of the OS to provide the radio integration. Any changes to the platform must be thoroughly field testing and in some cases pass regulatory approval (i.e. FCC). T-Mobile announced that they would do the Windows Mobile 2003 upgrade to their Pocket PC Phone Edition many months ago, but it has taken a while to get it delivered. In the mean time, many folks have found copies from various sources and loaded it on their devices. T-Mobile has now released the official version of this upgrade.

You can download it at T-Mobile.

Unlike previous updates from TMobile, anyone can download this one, but it will only install onto a XDA with a TMo SIM installed...

(But if I glance at the ROM .EXE file with WinRAR I can see NK.nbf nestled snugly in there...)

Scratch that...

The ROM image at the identified link has been reverted back to 3.14.00.

From chiaspod over on PocketPC Passion:

Did the upgrade.

I now have a lovely Gernsbach-style brick.

I'm on the phone with T-Mobile, and the guy on the other end is probably laughing at me being such a geek as to do this at 2 AM, but ... eh.

I'm getting to the initial boot screen ("Welcome to T-Mobile"), but not getting past it.

Version numbers are:
G324e4
R6.25.02
4.01.16

The technicians at T-Mobile have discovered a flaw in the code released that affects a non-trivial portion of the users that will result in an error condition as I just described. They're pulling the link, and a fix should be out in about, eh, a week according to the Canadian I'm talking to right now (he says "proh-cess," not "prah-cess").

Hopefully the sync issues will be addressed too. Some users are having some syncing issues.

From what I've read tonight the people who are having problems have a lot of stuff on the XDA and so they run out of RAM in the middle of the install. Apparently the upgrade fails in a bad way when this happens.

I did an OS upgrade using an SD card and it went OK. I'll follow up with the R/S when this all gets straightened out.

Even if the active sync problem was resolved for me I still feel that this is not working okay.

If I try to multi task with IE, and verichat open it often times freezes and I can not get out of it until I soft reset.

My soft resets went from 2 to 3 a day to about 12 a day.

If I try and let verichat load on bootup, major problems also occur.

I have 20 megs of RAM available for use too so it should have plenty of operating room.

Me too (x 2).

Both of the ones we have here at work upgraded fine, AFTER doing a hard-reset BEFORE the upgrade.

They'd lose their ActiveSync connection at the beginning of the upgrade before we hard-reset them. Anyhow, after the hard-reset, the upgrades ran fine. The users haven't reported any problems with the units, ... and these users (one CEO, one director) are very quick to cry when anything is less than perfect. <insert knockonwood.wav>

Just a Thought.
Those of you who are reporting not having any problems whatsoever, are you sure that you have actually upgraded to the new ROM Version? The old ROM version is 3.14.40 while the new ROM version should read 4.01.16. The download is still available at the site that SageForce had posted yesterday, i.e.
http://www.t-mobileapps.com/download...CEv4.01.16.exe
The link that is provided in this Thread points to the old version.
I am still too chicken to install the upgrade just in case it screws up my XDA. I would like to see a larger sampling of testaments or a blessing from T-mobile, otherwise I am sure that their customer support will not even talk to me if I get into problems.

I will keep reading your reports.
Thanks

I am going to try it once more. To be honest with you right after I install the upgrade thourgh my SD memory card I have the same problem. I don't even have to have programs installed for my XDA to lock up. I just setup my XDA hit the power button and about ten minutes later it's locked up and will not respond to the power button. Well I will keep you all posted if I find anything to help.

If this helps any, ...

Well, I'm still awaiting news from my sources; however, I've found out this much through my contacting of T-Mobile's Wireless Tech Support:

1. The update and notes were pulled because they were having problems with the website and the links to the downloads.
2. Should the upgrade not be successful, they will be happy to send you a replacement - even if it is out of warranty!

Thumbs up Success for Windows Mobile 2003 Install!

This morning I had a successful installation of WM 2003 on my T-Mobile PPCPE.
The first thing I did after backing up everything was to do a hard reset. After that I made SURE that I had ActiveSync 3.7.1 up and running and that my CRADDLE was plugged directly into a USB on my computer (NOT A HUB)
It installed without any problems on the first try.

Thumbs down In A Word...

PANINFUL....

I just upgraded. Wish I had not. Many problems. Here are a few:
1. Memory. Lose memory with nothing running in background. From 7M to 2M with no programs running. Have to soft reset to fix.
2. Have lost SD card twice in 2 days. Currently have trash in the 256M Sandisk card that I can't remove. Screwed up so bad took a format to fix both times.
3. Lockups are frequent. Soft resets at about one per 2 hours.
4. Have had a folder I installed in SD card disappear twice. No idea what. Created a folder called MP3. Placed music in it and played the songs. Went back to play again. Folder gone.
5. Installed Franklin Covey software that syncs with Outlook. Worked fine. No problem. Just tried to use it, and the folder is there, but all the program files in the folder are gone.

I could go on.. and on.. and on.. but you get the point. The upgrade is not stable. I knew better than to install a first version of a Microsoft product. I broke my own rule and I am now paying for it.

Thanks for listening...

Ummm, Windows Mobile 2003 has been out for almost a year now, so you didn't break any rule.

Ahhh.. 2003 has been out for that amount of time, BUT each version is somewhat different as it is "tweaked" for each device by the company using the OS. That is what I meant about the first version comment.

Correct Weblink for TMobile USA Pocket PC Phone Edition upgrade

I just got off the phone with Tmobile, this is the correct link for the HTC version used in the states.

http://software.se.t-mobile.com/

Follow the instructions next to the link for Pocket PC. Good luck, I am not sure if mine will work yet. It is downloading now, sure is slow. I guess others found it first.

Hi all,
Thanks to the previous post.I too just spoke with T-Mobile. They confirmed the site & the upgrade. They explained the upgrade was actually ok & it was the link that had problems. That's the reason for the new site.I asked the Teir 2 representive about the reported bugs. He said he was not aware of any bugs. He did say if it bombs out during upgrade it will corrupt the PC's memory. He also said make sure you have the most current active sync downloaded.I asked him about the aforementioned hard reset. He said the upgrade preforms the reset as part of the process. I still think I will wait a few more days. Good luck to all.

An alternative to upgrading!

I was searching for a program that would let me use my XDA as a IR modem with my laptop. I came across these guys...

http://xda-developers.com/

they have developed a custom ROM image that has everything in it I have ever wanted. Even Pocket DivX. A TON of USEFUL programs, that I would have loaded up anyway in RAM. And they have gotten rid of alot of the junk!

You can get the ROM here (Jeff Summers post)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=1611

I loaded this bad boy up, and am duly impressed. Now I find T-Mobile has finally released 2003....what year is it? I'm going to have to think long and hard about upgrading, and losing all the neat functionality I just gained!
