Pharos Brings SmartNavigator to Pocket PC Phone Edition

Still in search of the killer app for your pdaPhone? Look no further! The convergence of today's pdaPhones makes things possible now that no one would have thought about a few years ago. Most people are familiar with the great GPS and navigation applications that work equally well on PDA and pdaPhone alike. Now Pharos has exploited the real-time connectivity to provide instant traffic and points of interest information. If you have a Hitachi G1000, Samsung i700, or one of the HTC made Pocket PC Phone Edition devices (T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition, AT&T SX-56, iMate, O2 XDA or XDA II, T-Mobile MDA II, Qtek 1010 or 2020)

Here are some excerpts from the Pharos website...

Smart Traffic - Integrates with Pharos's Ostia navigation software to give real-time, easy-to-read, live traffic information, helping you see the road ahead on your Pocket PC screen. By working with departments of transportation in 25 metro areas, Pharos is able to provide up-to-the-minute highway sensor data to your Pocket PC. Smart Traffic uses your Pocket PC Phone Edition's wireless GPRS or CDMA link to connect to the Smart Navigator services and receive traffic information about where you are, wherever you are. Smart Traffic lets you view traffic flow and events, allowing you to react to traffic conditions, before you get stuck in them.

Smart Finder - Gives you access to business locations, addresses and phone numbers whenever and wherever you need it. Using your Pocket PC Phone Edition's internet connection, look up restaurants, banks, gas stations, hotels and other businesses using category and key word searches. Find places by proximity to a location you specify, your destination or by your current location, and then set a route, and navigate to that spot effortlessly. It's all seamlessly integrated for easy looking and routing. Just like having the Yellow Pages at your fingertips, but with the added convenience of GPS navigation!

You can find out more at Pharos.

Have they given us a review copy to try out? If not, think we can get one? I'm preparing a review for Routis right now, which is excellent.

I have a Pharos GPS, but stopped using their software because it was just horrible beyond belief. Total junk, unreliable. Support e-mails went unanswered. Hopefully for this version they've learned something.

Does this give GPS mapping without buying a separate GPS receiver? Does it integrate with MS Pocket Streets, Pharos' own maps, or both? This description tells very little - and they didn't respond to an inquiry I sent them Dec. 29th - tho, to be fair, I sent it to their sales address.

It needs a GPS receiver. All this adds is the ability to get updated road/traffic info via the wireless connection.

Not surprised they didn't answer. I have never received an e-mail reply from either tech support or sales at Pharos.

I have used Pharos for sometime and have been a beta tester for 6.0 software version and the new i700 cable. I think you will find the new software works very well, and that the support has improved. If you have any issues, I can give you contacts within Pharos to get you what you need.

Rob.
