HP is quite the story with pdaPhones. For the record, they had the first official Pocket PC Phone Edition in the world, under the HP Jornada brand, but it was tossed out with the Compaq merger. For a first generation product, the Jornada was very good, and users are left baffled as to why HP dumped it. Since that time, it seems like every few months we here a rumor that HP is either going to produce a pdaPhone, or that they aren't. Now we are back on the "make one" rumor.
An online retailer, Tek n Toys, who is somehow related to our friends at Pocket PC Thoughts (if you hit the Shop button on PPCT, you'll end up at this Canadian retailer... ) has an iPAQ 6000 pdaPhone for sale at their site now. The thing is, that the picture (shown here) is of the TI Wanda reference design. Here are the specs as listed at Tek n Toys...
"This iPAQ would have a 3.5 inch transflective display with 65000 colours, an integrated VGA camera, SDIO slot, a removable 1850mAH Lithium Ion battery, 64MB RAM/64MB ROM, Bluetooth (v 1.1}, WLAN 802.11b, and Quad-band GSM/GPRS (class 10} built-in. This iPAQ will apparently be roughly the same size of the H2200 series and more specifically, is slated for release in March 2004."

The specs sound very similar to a rumor I heard from someone who works for a company that has a hardware contract with HP/Compaq. All the details match.
My company is under NDA with HP and they are indeed working on a GSM iPaq phone, but general release is not expected until late 2H 2004, if not 2005. The product is still in development. They do not have any concrete plans for a CDMA version, although they say there have been a lot of requests. We shall see...
Creo que la noticia no tiene fundamento. Se puede comprobar que la fotografía coincide con un modelo en fase de desarrollo de Texas Instrument. Se puede observar en :
The latest word is that it has been officially called the iPAQ 6300 and it is a GSM phone with WiFi and Bluetooth. The service provider is T-Mobile for the rollout which is expected mid-to-late summer.
It also doesn't look anything like the picture above. This is a new design. This thing may actually do roaming between WiFi hotspots and GPRS... which would be very cool. Timeframe is correct.
Quad-band GSM/GPRS... what networks is that compabile with? Just T-Mobile and AT&T, or is GPRS compatible with Verizon or Sprint or the others? One of the reasons I didn't go with T-Mobile 2 years ago was that their coverage really sucked, but if that's been fixed, well, damn!

The reason for quad band is because AT&T and Cingular have started using 850Mhz spectrum in the US, its not a huge deal but could be worth more down the road. Sprint and Verizon are CDMA, a totally different radio technology than GSM/GPRS, so you can't mix them. As for coverage, it will vary greatly by where you live, and where you use your phone. I live in the capital city of NY State and spend 95% of my time within a 4 mile radius of the capital. For where I use my phone, I rank Verizon the lowest, T-Mobile next, and Sprint the best. You'd never guess that, but its because there are a number of Verizon holes that I spend a great deal of time in. So, you can't make blanket judgements on coverage in most cases.

I spent 80% of my time either at my desk or at home, it's the other 20% I'm worried about! T-mobile phones are GSM-only, and their coverage is only within large metropolitan areas and along major highways. Get off any of those arteries or leave a city they cover, and you've got nothing; verizon and sprint tri-mode phones will function on each other's systems and old analog systems so pretty much no matter where I am, I will always have cell phone coverage. (Which is academic really- I've never been in an area where I've roamed digital and only very rarely have I switched to or roamed in analog)
I'm told by T-mobile subscribers in my area (Hampton Roads, Virginia) that the coverage in the area is spotty, and there are long sections of dead spots on the highways between here and DC. T-Mobile covers all the places I generally travel to, I'm just fretting over that last 5%. The way I figure, it's when I'm in the middle of nowhere and have a problem that I'd need a phone the most Verizon has the best coverage in the area, and I've always been very happy with them. Sprint has OK coverage in the area too, but my house is in a very weak spot for Sprint. (My Verizon phone works everywhere in my masonry-constructed house with the antenna up but sometimes loses the signal in the living room with it down; my sister-in-law's sprint phone only works reliably outside and in the kitchen and cuts out frequently in the rest of the house.)
I would quickly purchase the h6300 from Tmobile tommorow when it is released, but I have concerns about the processor only being 200mhz compared to all the faster 400mhz. Is the TI Omap processor in the h6300 faster than the registered mhz of the processor somehow? The old Pocket PC with Tmobile was also 200mhz and it is disappointing to see that HP did not increase the speed. I also have concerns about the cover not being protected. Is there a sturdy, thin flip cover for the it? It needs to be thin so it can fit easily in my front shirt pocket. I know it sounds funny that i have to put it in my shirt pocket, but i am a Pokice officer and with all the equipment on the belt i cant get the PC out of my pocket easily and it wont fit anywhere safely on my belt. Anyway, please let me know if the processor is somehow comparably as fast as the 400mhz processors out there. Thanks..
I did read that HP's reason for a 200mhz processor was to keep the cost down. Huh? How much more for a 30-400mhz processors? It cannot be hundreds, and since HP isn't making it HTC is the purchasing volume at HTC would make this realistic.
I was wondering about the speed of certain applications such as Microsoft Voice Command and such. Also, will the processor speed make a difference in dvd"s played on windows media player? Honestly, the HP h6300 is not much of an upgrade from the old one. You get 64mb instead of 32mb and quad band which helps me none since I dont travel much. Also, its only got a VGA camera when all the new ones coming out in June and July have 1.1 or 1.3 meg pixels. You get WiFi which I dont use and bluetooth which can be useful. Overall, I am not impressed that much. But, thats just me and my wants and needs. I am impressed with the price if you sign with Tmobile. I am waiting to see if the MPX will come with a carrier that has EDGE or some other form of faster internet speed. That would make the difference to me. I talked with Tmobile who said they are not expecting EDGE anytime soon which is very disappointing. I also like the fact MPX is clamshell which protects the screen and HP's doesnt. I am still wondering about the LG SC8000 coming out in the US rebranded to HP?
