How do I do voice dialing?

<img src="images/neunavigator_mda.gif" align="right">
The Pocket PC Phone Edition does not directly provide voice dialing as part of the OS features. There are several 3rd party applications, however, that provide this capability. Some of the latest Pocket PC Phone Edition devices are including voice dialing software as part of the package when you buy it. For example, the Samsung i700 includes Voice Signal (proprietary application that is not yet available for other devices) and the Hitachi G1000 includes Fonix VoiceDial.

I love your FAQ.

FYI: The product ID for your Voice Dialer affiliate link above is incorrect. It should be productId=45688.

Indeed, Ava (my trusty avatar) was also disappointed that I wasn't registered. She's here now and quite happy about to be so too!

I tried all four of them. And I must say the best one that worked (For Me) was the VITO one. Pretty impressed with the quality of the function. Although, I miss the fact that with Neovoice you could map voice commands to additional functions.

Thanks for the great information and informative threads!

Cheers
Tomas

Fonix, the good and the bad

I tried the demo version of Fonix and bought it after being reasonably happy with the trial version. My only gripe is that of my 1500 or so contacts, it seems to have trouble recognising about 4, one of whom is my best friend!!

Otherwise it's very accurate indeed. Fonix's biggest benefit is that you dont need to train it to recognise names - its pronunciation engine figures that out for itself, and it works with some amazingly difficult names.

Looks like people are most happy with VITO or Fonix. Advantage of Fonix is no training. What advantages do you see with VITO? Also, I'm interested in not using anymore of my MAIN MEMORY ... can this be totally installed on SD card?

Fonix 1.1

Fonix 1.1 worked the best for me. No training and I use Caller2Picture by v2r software if you install some of the other voice dialing software your sub menu will not allow you to add pictures or assing ringtone's to contacts since the menu will then say to add to voice dial. So I had to find one that worked and Fonix seems to do the trick.

Fonix VoiceDial

Gotta use Fonix VoiceDial, It is very accurate and plays off of your contacts without any training. If you want to give any of your contacts a "Nickname" you can. You can also tell it what number to dial like this. It askes you "What Number" and you reply, 555-1234. It reads back the number and you confirm with "Yes" and it dials it. This program responds to you very quickly just like having a normal conversation with someone. My favorite Voice for it to use is the UK Rogers voice with the speed to approx. 60% and the pitch reduced to approx. 20%. to get a strong, deep, true sounding "UK Butler" voice. If you get the program, you will know what I mean by the %'s. I have this program running on the SD card without any problems, and a good thing because the "UK Rogers" voice is much larger than all the other voices combined (1.8MB) but it, by far, sounds the most natural. This program is AWSOME, and many heads turn when I use it! Go to FONIX.com to download a trial version and you will soon be purchasing it!

I have a Lexar 256Mb SD Card, with P L E N T Y of room on it; but I don't have so much RAM left out of my 32Mb on my T-Mobile PPC PE. Can you tell me if FONIX can be totally installed on the SD card? Does it take any "storage" space at all on in RAM?

mikealanlevy---

I just added your answer about the SD card at the same time that you were posting your question. Exept the part about any of the program on the RAM. I am not sure about the RAM part. I have looked through my file system and did not see any signs of it in "Main Memory". I also use a 256MB card. Love to have all the room!. I use a 128MB card for my MP3's.
Hope this helps.

I downloaded trial version of FONIX ... seems pretty good ... however, regardless of whether I specified button 1 or button 2, it assigns VoiceDialaer to button 2 (the CALENDAR button). When I uninstall FONIX, button 2 does not work anymore, it says "short cut not found" or something like that ... so I have two questions:

1. When I uninstall FONIX, how do I get my CALENDAR functionality assigned back to hardware button 2

2. Is there anyway to get VoiceDialer on button 1 (what is now CONTACTS), and keep button 2 as my CALENDAR?

Fonix VoiceDial

I had the same problem with the button assignment. I now use "JOGBUTTON" http://pdaphonehome.com/phpBB2/download.php?id=173 to assign my Button 2 for my Contacts, Calendar, Calculator, Ect. and let Fonix VoiceDial use my "Calendar" button (Button 1). (I can't figure out why the (L) button is considered Button 2 and the (R) is Button 1) ANYBODY KNOW?

To reprogram the button to work with "Calendar" go to Start---->Settings---->Buttons----> associate button 1 with "Calendar"

Recap---
I have: Button 1-VoiceDial, Button 2-JogButton
WORKS GREAT!

Yesterday I changed my button assignment from my last post.

I have set up my "JOGBUTTON" button to have "VOICEDAIL" in the 1st push of Button 2. If I hold the button it scrolls through my other programs: Contacts---> Calender--->Media Player--->Ect.
I programed my "Calender" (Button 1) to be my "RECORD" button which records during the time that I am holding down the button. The cool thing that I found out about this setup is that if I am talking to someone on the phone and I need to record part of the conversation, like capturing a phone number, all I need to do is press and hold Button 1 and it will record that part of the conversation and files the recording in NOTES under CALLS. I can do all of this without ever looking at the phone. Great setup for driving! This setup DEFINITLY works the best for me as I use the recorder for quick notes on the fly.

Headphone button?

Does anyone know if one can reassign the headphone button to be used in conection with voicedialing? I often have my xda in the pocket, and would like to use the headphone button rather than button 1&2.

Thanks,

/T

Sorry

Sorry, but I don't think that is possible. You are surely correct that it would be ideal.

'I've been reading the posts on voice activation programs. I tried a few. I downloaded Fonix Voice Dial after I spoke to a chap named Tim Hong at Fonix. Tim also mentioned I should try Voice Central. BOY IM REALLY GLAD I DID. It reads e-mails, launches's apps. dials, closes tasks, reads contact info.etc.etc. I also use the Digital "Rodger" voice. I personally think its better than Microsofr's Voice software. Download the demo. It really turns heads at parties, especially when it reads my emails. Last time I checked the Fonix site they had incorporated Voice Dial & Voice Central into one software package. GOOD LUCK
