An interesting piece, newlyconverged.
A couple of things stand out (assuming the numbers are reliable):
1) MOT seems to have shipped to VZW ~155k Qs in support of the product launch (Q2 '06).
2) "Other" PDA unit shipments is the category that would include the i730, i830, PPC-6700, and XV6700, along with (almost) all other HTC devices and who knows what else. In Q2, this category accounted for ~355,000 units.
Now, if the Samsung ix30 family represents a 10% share of the "Other" group (it's probably less), then only 35k units shipped in Q2. Annualized, this sales rate would be, say, 140k.
From this, we can conclude that no more than 140k i730/i830 units were sold (well, shipped to VZW) in the first year following the i730's release last July; the actual number is likely less than 100k units.
With over 210 million cell phones now operating in the US, this represents vanishingly small market penetration--somewhere between..."elite" and "cult."
