OK, if a mod feels this is inappropriate for i730/i830 discussion I am cool with that. After reading the "heinzsight" thread, I was prompted to make some comments and did not want to hijack that thread. I read many different forums and after awhile I get uptight at how the English language gets butchered. So what's your biggest pet peeve - express it here. I am no elitist and make plenty of mistakes myself, but I thought it would be fun to see what others have to say.
"anyways" - DOES NOT EXIST. Please, it's "anyway". Everyone, quit using "anyways".
Good grief - where to start? I could kill a day on this topic.
But to pick one, I think I'd have to say the "IM dialect" - you know, "u r so rite. thx". It drives me crazy trying to help someone out but having to leap the extra hurdle of figuring out what the heck they're saying.
However, I will admit to being a bit of a logophile - I have 2 dictionaries in my phone, one in my office, one in my bedroom, one in my den, one in the kitchen - you get the picture.
I'm also one of those weirdos who would love to own that massive Oxford dictionary - the one that's something like 27 volumes.
I agree with everything here--I'm glad it got posted. The only thing I do before making a snap judgement on grammar is to look at the person's profile (if they've filled it out completely) to see where they are from. Bad grammar is acceptable for those who do not speak English as their native language, as long as the meaning is clear.

the heinzsight was the one that really got me. Only the really bad ones get me though because my spelling and grammar suck. I'm a programmer and I type in code all day long.
That's my eggscuse (I'm sure that'll kill ya quick cause I did it on purpose) and I'm sticking to it.
"Can I have a look" should be "May I have a look".
That would depend on the intent of the question! Are they asking if they may have permission, or if they can physically do so. (Often, you can do something, but you may not!)
catagory instread of category
lot's instead of lots
actually, anything whose form of plural is spelled as the word appended by 's: train's plane's automobile's etc
Actually, I found out that most foreigners tend to have good grammar since they learned English as a foreign language in school.

D.
You're correct. But what I meant was the miss use of the phrase.

That would be "misuse".
It is simply amazing how many purported high school and college graduates believe not adhereing to generally aceepted rules of syntax and grammar is a valid method of communication.

Hey maxnix, thanks for the correction. I won't make that mistake again.
I hope the second part of your reply wasn't aimed at me.
