Dave,
Great information, Dave. Very happy to see you interested in the fair use and at the same time watching the legalities.
Software defined radio is coming. Surly, software defined video recorders and copy machines are possible, too. MPAA is trying to control an electronic race they don't understand. Hey, MPAA we know you only have 0's and 1's; put them together any encrypted way you want --- the correct 0's and 1's can always be shaken out of the tree...especially since the correct way is released to the public view.
OK, got me interested a little, going to go search a bit....later.
Note:
"Verweij explained, "The Digital Millennium Copyright Act [DMCA] allows authorized equipment and software, such as hardware and software DVD players, to unlock the Content Scrambling System and Macrovision protection on DVDs."
Verweij says "allows authorized equipment and software". That 'autorized' means you already pay some license fees back to MPAA on the electronics which must be included in the hardware. Now the software part is another story. Makayama should hope to make money quick, before MPAA changes their encryption algorithm.
