Got the camera and camcorder, but thanks for reminding me to dust it off! We use the digital camera a lot, but the camcorder tends to sit in the closet. But the kid should give us some good material worth taping

I do believe that we now actually have a thread for every conceivable topic. I'm enjoying the read. Best wishes to you. I can remember my wife and I discussing the pending arrival of our first child more than 30 years ago and actually wondering what the heck we got ourselves into.
Thirty five years of marriage (to the same woman), two grown kids and four grandkids later, we wouldn't change a thing. (Well maybe we'd eliminate the time the sheriff came to the house to tell us that the young son was caught with a bunch of kids toilet papering the high school.) But all in all, a great experience.
My daughter has two beautiful boys and is a great Mom herself now and the t.p. boy is an attorney and has a beautiful boy and girl. (too many beautifuls?) Anyhow, all is good. Again, good luck.
Bob

...and now for real advise....
Warning: This post contains graphic suggestions concerning child raising.
When my wife and I had our first child (now she is 13) we were staying in a hotel where we met a Mexican woman. She was very kind but made the comment that she thought it very odd that Americans are so quick to put their kids in separate cribs.
She explained that nursing was critical and that they were in the custom of sleeping with the child for the first 6 months or so.
She reminded us that the child has spent the last 9 months of it's life in intimate contact with it's parent and was in no way eager to end the relationship. We tried it and found that it made life considerably easier. All 5 of our kids were, from then on, given the same treatment with favorable results. They soon got to the point that they were ready to sleep on their own.
I can't encourage you enough to consider nursing. The first 2 weeks will kill you, but after that, the convenience and health benefits will last a long time. You also get a lot more sleep. One or two squeeks and you plug them in and go back to sleep. No getting up, no mixing formula and waiting for it to heat in the Microwave while you are getting more awake by the moment, no sterilizing bottles, and no EXPENSIVE formula. Plus, you always have it handy, where ever you are! The kids seem more secure, healthy and you get to enjoy them more closely.
We also found great books from family.org that made us realize that weren't the first to go through this journey.

Thanks for the encouragement, bobbank. I found the "beautiful"s to be inspiring.
As for nursing, yeah, I don't think my mother would let me do anything else. She's a freak over baby health issues, so there's no way out for me! (Which is a good thing, of course )

Nursing = Good
Sleeping with newborn baby = BAD!! BAD!! BAD!!
I grew up raising babies (nearly 100 foster babies in 16 years). It makes me cringe every time I hear this "advice". Just in the last couple of weeks there was another story in the news of an infant who dies while sleeping in bed with the well-intending parents.
If you really feel the need to be close, put the crib in your room, but please don't sleep with the baby in your bed. Not only can this cause attachment issues (more correctly, over-attachment issues) it is also very dangerous. Just think about two (or even one) unconscious 125+ lb. adults vs. one tiny little 8-10 lb. baby and you can understand the risks.

Maritza and all,
I was only relaying my experience. In most matters concerning your children, you will find that everybody is more than willing to give you advise. The best thing that any parent can do is use common sense and kindness while gently smiling and tell the advisor to take a hike.(me included). Use YOUR jugement and enjoy them.
I have sent a PM to coolcat explaining my rationale and apologize to the rest of you for suggesting controversial advise.
I'm going back to phones now..

i agree with your advice bo.
i do have a tidbit for consideration and debate:
how many kids have died from a parent rolling over on them
vs.
how many kids have died from sids or any of the other crib related deaths

Hey - last time i checked, this is still a free country. i see two opinions expressed that are somewhat at odds with each other. since we are all different and have different experiences that contribute to who we are and probably most important the last time i checked, there is no one sure-fire way to raise kids that is guaranteed to be fool-proof, totally without risks, etc., it's great that you are both :coolquick and maritza can benefit from your comments :redspotda
