Actually, to clear the air about something mentioned here, as of today, my mother has not passed away. Without details, she's in extremely poor health and doesn't have allot of time left.
My mentioning of an air assault is solely based on the fact that our government doesn't seem to really give a crap about a serious health altering "addicting" drug, that affects billions of people, obviously, those who do smoke, and also, those who don't.
So what it will take is public pressure to get laws passed and city ordinances in place as to make it more difficult for our younger ones not to get involved in a real bad habit, and for those whom are already addicted (yeah, I know, you can quit anytime), the help they need to "Kick" the habit and be able to stick around alittle longer, to say... see there own grandchildren.
Here in CA there's no more of this "none smoking section" crap (whoever came up with that should get tied to the front nose of the plane), and so they now have to all stand outside.
Since it's not likely that I'll ever get my hands on such an aircraft, I do my part by sticking my nose into restaurants (while in the process of having to pass through the thick cloud of... well, you know) just to tell the manager we've decided to eat elsewhere until they get there act together and start doing what allot of restaurants in Hollywood are doing, which is, you can't smoke within a 100 feet of the restaurants doors.
Eventually the health department will get there act together on this and get more involved, but for now, the distance thing helps in some cases.
I'll get off my soap box now.
But for those who are smokers, I'm not bellowing just to get you mad, but rather, to hopefully get you to stop and lead healthier lives. And at (what now?) $33.00 a carton, just think about all the extra accessories you could buy along with that new phone you've been "WAITING SUCH ALONG TIME FOR!"
Since your on this board, your considered friends.
Getting up on the soapbox before the thread is closed. I've lost too many relatives to smoking related illnesses to let this go.
I believe in personal responsibility and don't give a rip about people who smoke as long as:
1. I continue to get insurance cost breaks for not smoking.
2. Smokers don't smoke anywhere that I might have to come in contact with their pollutants. Fortunately, many of the major US cities are putting appropriate ordinances in place to fix that. They are not being put in place fast enough, IMO. Yeah, I agree with the 100 feet of all public entrances idea.
3. Smokers don't smoke anywhere that children come in contact with their pollutants. This is the one that we still don't have any laws to address. Too many times I see adults smoking in cars with children inside. Heck, I lost and never got to meet one aunt because my grandparents smoked all over her until she died. She had asthma and back in the 1940s they had no idea that they exacerbated her illness. I'm not fond of Big Brother poking his nose in the homes of citizens but I do think that just like we have seat belt laws we can have laws to protect children in cars. Also, just like we are able to report those who we suspect are physically abusing their children, we should be able to report those who might subject their children to these pollutants.
