LB'S COMDEX 2002 Update's - DAY 1

MONDAY - NOV18

Yep folks I'm here. And, as you can tell from the late hour of this post, i've been busy.

Although Comdex attendance was said to be down this year, by around 75,000 visitors, lots of good things are still to be found.

The morning started with an hour at the registration line. (my badge did'nt come in the mail quick enough). During my wait, and while catching up on my SMS readings, many in line were gandering over my shoulder to see just what I had that I could be so easily navigating with one hand.

Hour's up.... and off we go into the halls of.... Wait! Just a quick stop at the new Blue Fish Display to download the latest Comdex Info & Exhibitor updates. With just a quick point and freeze for 60 seconds, the 6035 and I are locked and loaded for travel.

The focus of this years Comdex Show is Bio integrated security, Wireless Technologies, including Bluetooth being used in just about everthing imagineable.

If any of you happend to read a previous 6035 discussion containing a wireless headset (to which the company is actually located out nearby me), there are more to come, and likely cheaper being I counted 3 more companies coming out with them as well.

Another item on the ticket is PDA's and Palm has a contender. It's called the TUNGSTEN. Looking sleek in polished silver, the unit show's mearly a round navigation pad with a center button on the lower front, in addition to the four basic access buttons, two on either side, and the color display. Holding the unit in one hand and pulling down on the lower half, reveals the graffitti tablet. In the upper right corner of the unit are a series of small holes hosting a small microphone that supports the new built-in voice message recording feature. With Palms new 5.0 firmware comes the ability to host bluetooth products via the SD Card insert, one of which will allow you to hook into a device that allows you to control downloaded/converted PowerPoint presentations, and also giving you the ability to control those presentations via a small handheld remote. Handspring had better keeps it's eyes open as this new unit also hosts the ability of GSM cellular.

Also located at the Palm booth was a newly appointed portable keyboard. Sleeeeeeek is'nt the word boys and girls. Also, styl'n in polished silver, with just a tug on both sides, will pull the keyboard apart, allowing you to fold it backup into one piece. Almost as thin as the Palm itself, what Palm basically did was get rid of the excessive overhead that we see in many of the portable keyboards today. Surely it's only designed for the TUNGSTEN, though it would certainly be a complement to the 7135.

Speaking of which.... along in my travels, but what did appear? (Ain't no Raindeer that's for sure) but rather, the 7135 on display!
Nope, was'nt a Kyocera booth, (yet), but another vendor using the phone to show off there mobility software. You'll have to excuse me, but I just don't remember the name of the software (why, I just don't know )

After 20 mins of hands on play time, I can honestly say, this is one phone that's going to blow the socks of pretty much all the rest. The unit I had appeared to be a recent prototype as the silver buttons had a brushed look to them and the outer casing was looking rather scruffed up from it's travels. Inquiring with the local there, the comment was made it only took him about a day to get used to the new localities of the screen vs. graffitti ergonmics. The phone is lighter by about 3oz I would say, and fits well into the palm of your hand whereby you know your not carrying motorola flip phone, that's for sure. I would need to have the phone alittle longer to provide a more in depth details, but! that time will likely come for all of those anxiously awaiting very soon.

(This ones for you Robert). I also happen across the company Veo that sold a SD card digital camera. Image resolution is good and the product is bundled with image album software. Retail price was'nt being mentioned at the time.

Well, it's off to get some shut eye, but i'll be back here tomorrow with more, including the test drive i'll be taking at the Mercedes Benz test course they've setup out here.

Veerrroooommmmm!

Thanks for the Comdex update LB. I wish that I could be there. I used to go in years gone by but, alas, it just isn't in my budget these days.

Did you post your Comdex update using your 6035? I enjoyed reading it a lot! Keep them coming!!!

Yes great post, I hope to make it to COMDEX, maybe next year, we shall see. HHMM..I think that Cigar Aff does one of their Big Smoke weekends about this time of year too...OH that would rock, puff on some fine hand rolled cigars and see computer stuff...Not sure I could take it all...

Thanks for the play-by-play LB! Keep 'em comin'!

Actually, Veo is now selling (no longer pre-orders) their "Photo Traveler" Palm SD camera on their website for $99.99...
http://www.veo.com/Traveler_Palm/default.asp

I am so tempted to get one!

Have a great time LB. You know that we all wish we were there with you. Especially at the booth with the 7135!

LB'S COMDEX 2002 Update's - DAY 2

TUESDAY - NOV 19

Sunny morning with crisp air warming, cup of coffee in hand and off we go into day 2 of the Las Vegas Comdex show. Hoping to make a find of the century…, and find I did!

The show was said to be the smallest yet. With only 80,000 in attendance, and only the convention center hosting the event, it’s still a pretty good show. I can’t remember a time though when I actually got through the whole thing in two days though.

PDA’s & 6035 Accessories have been the focus of my search, probably not the right show for it, but, I have managed to come across some good contacts I think some of you will appreciate.

For starters…

A company called Genovation , they make all sorts of PDA accessories. Namely one item in particular, this Mini Keyboard.

My contact is Christophe Fructus, (Director of Marketing & Sales).

When I inquired about the product for the 6035, he said the keyboard's dongle (for 6035), will be ready for release in about 30-60 days. Also, there will only be one cable going from the phone to the keyboard, not the two you see in the pic.

I also inquired about the 7135, and he said it will be in production after the first of the year. Once more, I through the pitch of being part of the largest (And Best) forum supporting the KY line and asked about a discount, his reply was he’s sure it could be done! So, when the item becomes available, he will email me and I’ll post it here. So if your intrested, send me an email 6035@lbocean.com and i'll add you to the list so when it becomes available I can tell him what the approx. order count will be.

Staying with the theme here, another MFG of keyboards I found was Flexis (http://www.flexis.co.kr/home/ehome.htm), makers of the portable, flexable keyboards. I know some of you were interested in the past about this particular item. They have lots and lots of styles and sizes. Unfortunately, nothing for the KY line. But, can come in handy for those days you don’t want to get the ole portable dirty, or, for the kids with those messy candy bars.

Stepping over to the power side of things, I found a company called Huan Guang Technologies that makes USB Power adapter cables.

Although they had nothing on the board for the KY line, Huan Guang himself was interested in getting a Travel Charger for the 6035 so he could get started on one. So, I hooked him up to the KY site and showed him what to order, and yes, specified that the voltages accuracy was Extreamly important. Once again, spreading good words about SPS, I hope to hear from Huan by early next year on this item.

I could’nt resist this next shot. Some of the bigger companies will hold little parties, for just the Exclusive Members, but usually they don’t hold them until in the evening. Being close to lunch time, there taking a pretty big risk of attack!

Moving along, we’ve all been trying to find that one solution for a better handsfree solution with fewer connections as possible, and not that the KY version isn’t great, but personally I would want to tear it apart and build it into the console so I didn’t have this large dongle like device sticking out of my cig. adapter. Not to mention, my cup holder can't be used in such case. So, in the past I’ve attempted this before, using a FM transmitter to send sound through the car’s sterio, and wasn’t to successful, but this one company, ATO, seemed to have a fairly good working device.

It’s called the Audio Bug (go figure). It’s small, simple to configure and is said to go for around $39.00 retail. None were available for show purchase, but I was told that I could find them on www.buy.com website.

Saving the best for last folks, I picked up a early copy (Dec Issue) of Handheld Computing. Grab a copy and turn to page 46, to feast your eyes upon the best article in town. Not to keep you in to much suspense… When grading products, they usually put the top rated ones in front, and yes Boys & Girls, the 7135 smokes the competition with a grading of A. I wouldn’t be doing the article justice by typing quotes here, so get up of your (ah hem) butts! and head down to the local book store for this one. One the front cover you will see the new line of Palm units, all three, side by side. Also in this issue is a ton of other good articles like on Palms OS 5.

Which reminds me, I goofed alittle in yesterdays posting about the TUNGSTEN, officially called the TUNGSTEN T. There are actually two units. The standard Palm version, that has the pull down, reveal Graffitti area (TUNGSTEN T), and the wireless version called TUNGSTEN W, which has a built in thumb keyboard right on the front. Rather cool looking unit actually.

It’s actually Wednesday morning, (sorry for the late update), I’m off once again to seek out some more goodies.

OK, ok… perhaps one little tidbit… The article show’s a retail price for the 7135 of… $499.00

Now can I go

Even the gas pumps are going video!

So...what we really want to know are the juicy "after-hours" tidbits. How's the action at the casino's? Seen any terrific shows? Give us some "back-alley" Las Vegas dirt!!!
