difference b/w a plug in and a program

Another newb question. I'm confused b/w the diff between a today plug in and a program. I want a differnt calander, something that i can open up to a month view and see bills/appointments that are color coded or have icons. I saw the Pocket informant 8 and also todayagenda 1.1. I assumed you would only use one of those but the PI8 is a program and the todayagenda is a plug in and i see people using both. Why would you use both and whats the diff? TIA

You typically access/launch a program through the start menu. A today screen plug-in is typically a subset of a program that provides you a condensed view off the application the Today screen. You can typically launch the app from the Today screen plug in. In your example, Pocket Informant is a calendar application that does all the things you want it to do, but it also has a today screen plug in that provides a condensed view of your calendar on the Today screen.
