Symbian is a platform / operating system designed for mobile devices with an ARM processor. The Symbian OS is developed by Symbian, Ltd. Symbian, Ltd. is owned by Nokia, Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, Panasonic, Siemens AG, and Samsung. Nokia has just under 50% share in the venture and the others hold varying shares from 15-5%.
History
The Symbian OS has its roots in Psion's EPOC which was used for small PDAs, sold predominantly in Europe and is available in different versions with different capabilities.
