I love my XV6700, but looking for suggestions for the next step up
I'll assume that since my XV6700 with Verizon is kind of old, that there are newer equvilents out there. I use mine for wifi at hotspots and at home, text messaging, phone use of course, using it as an MP3 player and for watching movies I pulled from DVDs onto miniSD cards.
I am not such a PDA guy that I know alot about the industry, new break-throughs, and new prodcuts. I use a Dell Axim as my GPS when traveling, and my XV6700 for everything else, so any advice you can provide is very helpful.
I think one must have feature is the full keyboard, ... and I am not that big of a fan of the Palm OS. I am sure it is a great product, but I prefer Pocket PC
I am assuming the XV6800 is the logical next step up, but I have never used one, and sometimes with newer models, you notice things you wish the old version had... but, if that is the suggestion from you guys, i will respect your wisdom.
Thanks in advance!
PS... has ANYONE beat the Pocket PC version of solitair? Is it just me, or is it harder than the PC version?
tt,
You asked for opinions, so here's mine. Others may disagree.
If you're sticking with Verizon and you're in the market for a new device in the next 6 months, then the XV6800 would appear to be your pick. Still, it's only an incremental improvement - the hardware advantages it has over the 6700 are currently limited to more storage memory and no antenna, and as far as software goes, the XV6700 is currently capable of far, far more customization. As EVDO Rev. A is rolled out in 2008, however, the 6800 will begin to shine - it's been designed to use the much-higher-speed data network, which will never happen for the 6700.
From the posts here and on other boards, there are a large number of people clambering to replace their 6700s with 6800s, preferably as insurance or warranty replacements - nobody's volunteering to switch back - so all in all I don't see any buyer's remorse. I'd be curious what kind of answers you'll get with this question on 6800 forum.

I'm probably going to be ordering the XV-6800 at the end of the week but I'm still not too sure about it - mainly the Voice Command issue regarding confirmations. I figure that I'll try it out for a time and if it's buggy then I'll re-activate my 6700.
Uhh, look around, people are dropping their 6800s like hot rocks. The 6700 running AKU 3.5 is very fast and reliable. And, if you run WM6, there is very little difference between the 6700 and the 6800.
I'd hold out, skip the 6800 and wait for the next generation. (it shouldn't be long)
Techtips....I myself am a user like yourself.....I agree with TMB and Tony, the 67 has it limits..but it is a very nice PocketPC when used with the proper AKU, it is like tweeking a carb, once you have it dialed in, it is a smooth running machine, I would not upgrade to a 68, just like TMB/Tony said wait longer for a next generation.....the 68 to me is like upgrading your PC from a 1.5 cpu to a 2.0 cpu....which is really no big deal. I would hate to lose my 67 to a 68....maybe for a Touch, but yet again the Touch does not have built in Wifi.
Wow! Thanks so much for the awesome replies, very kind people in this group!
Thanks to TMB_XV6700 for the tip to post in the 6800 group. I will do that post-haste.
I've been starting to find that my 6700 is actually alot slower now than it was when I first used it. Soft reboots make little or no difference, and the lag time for it to react to the sliding out of the keyboard is almost mind numbing.
I guess I may need a ROM update, but I did one about 6 months ago...
In any case, thanks for the suggestions all, I do not know much about what all my 6700 is capable of so thanks for being nice to a noob!
My personal take on it would be to also consider the Samsung i760. It seems to me to be a very well engineered WM6 device and seems better made than the HTC products (xv6700/xv6800.) It also has a full slider keyboard. Most of the specs are very similar to the xv6800.
Anything you would want to upgrade from the 6700 to the 6800 for the i760 doesn't have. No RevA possibility and same memory as the 6700... Don't get me wrong, the i760 is a great phone, but in my opinion it is just the 6700 in adifferent form.
The i760 does indeed have Rev A, I just tested it and got well over 1.1MB download speed. Don't believe everything you read.
I couldn't help but laugh at that irony. hehe.
Well because I do not own an i760, all I can do is read and do research. If it does indeed have RevA upgradability, where did you get the upgrade from?
Also as a mod you may want to change the i760 FAQ on here which states it is only Rev0. http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/samsu...e-version.html
I'd be more convinced if you tested your upload speeds. i760 is not RevA capable.
It seems we have deviated a bit, I apologize, but I must come back...
Let me put it bluntly...
The place I work is going to buy my next phone. I get to keep it when I leave.
That being said, I may not be there in a year.
I estimate teh "xv6900" to be released in 2009.... I cant wait that long.
So, should I just bite the bullet and get the 6800? Or go withsomething different like the i760?
I really am rough with my xv6700, and it holds up great, I like durability. I also need to be able to watch my video files and listen to my podcasts and music files via a miniSD card,,,, im sure the i760 can do this, but want to make sure.
Also, if anyone knows, whats this I hear about the headphone jack of the 6800 being like a mini USB port...? I assume a good pair of bluetooth headphones would be better anyway...
Thanks for everyones thoughts, would like to buy a phone by Janurary (on works dime of course hehe .. but within reason, $400 or less)

I will leave all changes to the i760 FAQ to mrailing... I just happened to get my hands on a demo unit to play with, and of course had to test the EVDO speeds. I didn't test the upload speeds (only because it was a quick test before it was handed off to someone else) so I can't speak to that. My understanding is that somebody incorrectly identified the chip as EVDO Rev0, when in fact it must be RevA capable. Otherwise, when compared directly with the xv6700, the i760 blows it away side by side in download tests. I guess it also helps to be in an area upgraded to RevA by VzW, which mostly all existing EVDO sites are (to my understanding, as told by VzW people.) I have read all of the initial reviews of the i760, which all say that it is Rev0. I'm just not convinced that it isn't RevA capable based on performance against the xv6700.
What's more important to you.... the stated RevA and more memory on the xv6800 or the great form factor and front buttons on the i760?
If you do not run out of memory, or have a mem manager, are ok with the dataspeeds of Rev0 on your 6700 and possibly faster on the i760 as stated then I'd gow tih the i760. It is a great phone that has been around longer than the xv6800 so what bugs it may give you has been discussed already. Just now Sprint is trying to tweak their 6800 and I suspect verizonw ill be doing the same when they start gettign calls. The other thing to consider is that future upgrade. You may not be able to validate going from the 6800 to the "next big thing", but it may be a considerable jump from the i760 - if it can hold you over for a while. BTW, I beleive HTC originally labeled (or labeled in house) the Touch as the 6900.
Both are great phones. Goto a store and play with both and see which one takes you longer to put down. =)
Im learning that the i760 takes MICRO SD... i have about 4 2 gig MINI SD cards for my 6700... if I go i760 and sell off my 6700, I am assuming my MINI SD cards would be good for nothing on my i760?
Big draw back, i have TV shows, movies and MP#s on those cards.
