Member, Done with i730

Power user here looking for the next thing. I am an IT Senior Exec and very much a power user. It is reasonably important to both my professional and geek life to have the next sexy thing. I am looking at what is out there and not seeing anything that makes me get all jazzed, but perhaps I am not looking hard enough.

So, what is the most kick-ass, makes others stop and drool, executive accessory?

As a member here, I welcome your advice...

1. What PDA and/or mobile phone do you use today?

Sammy i730 with SD WM5 custom roms

2. Are you locked into a mobile carrier (i.e. Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS, etc.), or do you prefer a particular carrier? Do you know if one carrier has better coverage in places that you need to be?

End of 2 year deal with Verison, can go anywhere.

3. Where are you based? Do you stay in one place or travel a lot? Do you travel internationally... how much and where? Do you intend to use your PDAPhone there?

Travel constantly. used to travel to Europe a lot, not so much anymore. GSM is a nice to have, but I found Verizon working in India, so that migth work too.

4. Do have a preference of Palm, Pocket PC, Symbian, Smartphone OS, Blackberry, etc.?

Pocket PC bigot, but other OS's as long as I can use Office Docs, Push Exchange, etc.

5. Are you likely to run it the way it came out of the box, or do you intend to load a whole lot of extra applications and stuff on it? Do you know of anything now that you will need to run?

After intially loading much junk, I am back to mostly 2-3 core apps beyond delivered stuff.

6. How important is wireless data access, and for what would you use it? (i.e. Web browsing, VPN, Remote termnial Access, Instant messaging, etc)?

Web access is key. thought Broadband was required, but now not so sure. Mostly web, Google Maps, AIM, email.

7. Will you need to view Microsoft Office documents on the PDAPhone? Will you need to edit them?

Need ot view, like to edit.

8. Will you need access to an email system?
a)Is it corporate (Exchange, Groupwise,Lotus, Other?) What Version? Do you want email wirelessly or do you want to do it in the office with a sync cable/cradle? Can you get your Corporate email configured for mobile access or do you need to run a desktop redirector?
b)Is it Pop3/Imap? Who is the service provider?

wireless, push e-mail is required. corp can support either Mbile outlook or BB

9. Do you do SMS messaging a lot (telephone to telephone messaging)?

Not much

10. Do you want to use a GPS with the PDAPhone for mapping and navigation?

No

11. What is your size preference.. very close to the smallest cellphone, or you don’t care.. function over size?

Sexy could be big or sexy could be very small.

12. How will you carry it... pocket, belt, purse, etc.? Pocket

13. Do you prefer a particular form factor… flip-phone, candy bar, etc? No preference

14. Do you prefer a QWERTY keyboard, numeric dial-pad, or stylus?

15. Do you want to play a lot of video games on the PDAPhone? What kinds - puzzles, strategy, action adventure, etc.? Go, mostly

16. Do you want to listen to music on the PDAPhone? What kind... mp3, streamed, etc.? Mp3

17. Do you want a camera on the PDAPhone? Nice to have

18. Do you have any other hardware you intend to use with the PDAPhone? Do you intend to use any Bluetooth devices? What types of devices?

Bluetooth headset only

19. What kind of battery life do you need?(Always near a charger, battery life is not an issue or Need the battery to last several days) How many hours do you expect to spend talking on the phone? How many hours of data?(Web browsing, push email, VPN, IM etc) talktiem is important. am currently not happy to be charging daily.

20. What are your budget limits (PDAPhones range in price from below $100 for older used models to nearly $1000 for high end models without a carrier subisidy)? Mostly unlimited, but I fear spousal acceptance running out over $500

Check out HTC's new lineup. www.htc.com

Samsung's i760 will be out...eventually. The iPhone is as sexy and hot as it gets, but you can't view MSOffice documents on this. Good luck finding your new toy. The i730 is a tough act to follow.

I would have said the HTC7501 AKA Advantage but pocketable this baby is not. It's been getting great reviews though. Matt Miller wrote one over on the mobile gadgeteer I also enjoyed Lisa Gade's review on MobileTechReview. Even the folks over at engadget loved the hardware but they are hardly what you would call Pocket PC OS enthusiasts.

Overall this is a great device for an executive on the go but the price-point is a bit steep. I'm getting mine for $899 from tigerdirect. Amazon.com has them for $850 but there is a 2 to 4 week shipping delay right now. They sold all of their in-stock devices practically overnight. They are also available at some CompUSA stores if you'd like to check one out in person.
