Question I am finally ready for convergence, but what to buy?

1. What PDA and/or mobile phone do you use today?
I have a Dell Axim X5 PDA and LG9800 phone (VZW the V). Tired of carrying both around.

2. Are you locked into a mobile carrier (i.e. Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS, etc.), or do you prefer a particular carrier? Do you know if one carrier has better coverage in places that you need to be? (PLEASE SEE THE CARRIER NOTE BELOW)VZW seems to have best coverage in my area.

3. Where are you based? Do you stay in one place or travel a lot? Do you travel internationally... how much and where? Do you intend to use your PDAPhone there? Charlotte NC, Myrtle Beach SC(sometimes)

4. Do have a preference of Palm, Pocket PC, Symbian, Smartphone OS, Blackberry, etc.?Probably Smartphone or Pocket PC WM6

5. Are you likely to run it the way it came out of the box, or do you intend to load a whole lot of extra applications and stuff on it? Do you know of anything now that you will need to run?
I have xtra apps on the Axim. Probably will want weather radar and will add some sort of Navigation

6. How important is wireless data access, and for what would you use it? (i.e. Web browsing, VPN, Remote termnial Access, Instant messaging, etc)?
Not real important. Mainly to sync Calendar, Tasks, Contacts. (WiFi or wired preferred. VZW wireless sync way too expensive. I would rather Web browse from home on laptop

7. Will you need to view Microsoft Office documents on the PDAPhone? Will you need to edit them?
I would like to have this capability or at least some type of wordpad docs that will sync.

8. Will you need access to an email system?
a)Is it corporate (Exchange, Groupwise,Lotus, Other?) What Version? Do you want email wirelessly or do you want to do it in the office with a sync cable/cradle? Can you get your Corporate email configured for mobile access or do you need to run a desktop redirector?
b)Is it Pop3/Imap? Who is the service provider?
I don't really keep up with email on my phone or PDA. Use computer at home. Who knows, tho, I might like it if I tried it.

9. Do you do SMS messaging a lot (telephone to telephone messaging)?
Not very much.

10. Do you want to use a GPS with the PDAPhone for mapping and navigation? Probably.

11. What is your size preference.. very close to the smallest cellphone, or you don’t care.. function over size?
My LG VX9800 would be about right if I could just sync my calendar and to do list. I have found app for calendar but SOL on Tasks.

12. How will you carry it... pocket, belt, purse, etc.?
Belt.

13. Do you prefer a particular form factor… flip-phone, candy bar, etc?
Candy bar with number pad outside for quick access and qwerty slide out.

14. Do you prefer a QWERTY keyboard, numeric dial-pad, or stylus?
Yes?? See # 13

15. Do you want to play a lot of video games on the PDAPhone? What kinds - puzzles, strategy, action adventure, etc.? Emphatic No!

16. Do you want to listen to music on the PDAPhone? What kind... mp3, streamed, etc.? mp3 sometimes. My "V" does pretty well with Mini SD

17. Do you want a camera on the PDAPhone? "V" has one but never used it. Might be another try it you'll like it deal.

18. Do you have any other hardware you intend to use with the PDAPhone? Do you intend to use any Bluetooth devices? What types of devices?
Bluetooth headset for hands free use in car.

19. What kind of battery life do you need?(Always near a charger, battery life is not an issue or Need the battery to last several days) How many hours do you expect to spend talking on the phone? How many hours of data?(Web browsing, push email, VPN, IM etc) Talk maybe an hour or so a day. Update tasks & calendar an hour or so. Battery (extended) on "V" lasts a couple of weeks. Axim- I have two batteries and change / charge about weekly

20. What are your budget limits (PDAPhones range in price from below $100 for older used models to nearly $1000 for high end models without a carrier subisidy)?
$500-$600 range. Note: If anyone suggests an iPhone I will send a hit man.

Well, since no one has replied, I guess I'm on my own. What turned it off? Was it that Verizon has no decent PDA phones?

I see you have poked around some of the other forums, and probably have a little feel for the devices. VzW has 2 good options for you--the Q9 (smartphone) and the almost released i760. The i760 is a true ppcphone, and may be what you are used to with the Axim. It has a number pad, slide out keyboard, BT, etc.... You can get a small BT GPS receiver and use it with software on the device. However, the Q can do most of these things as well, but it is a smartphone, not a true ppc (it doesn't have a touchscreen). Slightly more limited in software, but can do most the things you list above.

I would stay away from the 6700--I don't think most power users really like it.
