Help me find a PDA Phone

1. What PDA and/or mobile phone do I use today?

Never used a PDA before. Using a Samsung S200 mobile now. Used to use Nokia phones as well.

2. Are you locked into a mobile carrier (i.e. Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS, etc.), or do you prefer a particular carrier? Do you know if one carrier has better coverage in places that you need to be?

NA - I am based in Singapore.

3. Where are you based? Do you stay in one place or travel a lot? Do you travel internationally... how much and where? Do you intend to use your pdaPhone there?

I travel occasionally, and I intend to use my phone/pda when I travel as well.

4. Do have a preference of Palm, Pocket PC, Symbian, Smartphone OS, Blackberry, etc.?

No.

5. Are you likely to run it the way it came out of the box, or do you intend to load a whole lot of extra applications and stuff on it? Do you know of anything now that you will need to run?

I probably would run a few other applications on it.

6. How important is wireless data access, and what would you use it for (i.e. web browsing, email, remote terminal access, AOL Instant Messenger, etc.)?

It would be very nice to have.

7. Will you need to view Microsoft Office documents on the pdaPhone? Will you need to edit them?

Yes, for both.

8. Will you need to access a corporate email system? Will you do this while in a cradle (or via a sync cable), or do you need to do this while you are out of your office?

Might need to.

9. Do you do SMS messaging a lot (telephone to telephone messaging)?

Yes, a lot. I send out about 200 -300 smses a month.

10. Do you need a GPS for mapping and navigation?

No.

11. What is your size preference.. very close to the smallest cellphone, or you don’t care.. function over size?
Pref something that is female friendly, and looks nice.

12. How will you carry it... pocket, belt, purse, etc.?

On hand, and in my purse.

13. Do you prefer a particular form factor… flip-phone, candy bar, etc?

No.

14. Do you prefer a QWERTY keyboard, numeric dial-pad, or stylus?

No pref.

15. Do you want to play a lot of video games on the pdaPhone? What kinds - puzzles, strategy, action adventure, etc.?

Puzzles mainly. I’ll like the option, but I doubt that I would be doing a lot of it.

16. Do you want to listen to music on the pdaPhone? What kind... mp3, streamed, etc.?

Yes. MP3.

17. Do you have any other hardware you intend to use with the pdaPhone? Do you intend to use any Bluetooth devices? What types of devices?

Prob a Bluetooth.

18. What are your budget limits (pdaPhones range in price from below $100 for older used models to nearly $1000 for high end models without a carrier subisidy)?

Around US $500

I'm not sure what's available in Singapore... probably some things that aren't available in the US. Most of the newer Bluetooth devices are more expensive than your target price, unless subsidized by the carrier with a new plan. Some to look at... Treo 650, Sony Ericsson P910, iMate PDA2K, JAM, or their Smartphone device, and Motorola MPx220. Any of these may be possibilities for you.

Check out this site. They sell unlocked phones so the price is higher. If you find a phone you like, you can probably get it cheaper from a carrier, but then you are locked into that carrier. See if anything there interests you.

Expansys is a reliable international source for pdaPhones, and do have a lot of unlocked devices.

HP ipaq 6365? / 6315 ?

Hi, thanks for your replies.

I am considering the HP ipaq 6365. I think it is released as 6315 in the US.

It's a pda phone and seems pretty ok... but i am a little turned off by the bulkiness as well as the mixed reviwes!

(still considering....)

Its a pretty good device. It is kind of squared off looking, but not really any bigger than the others. You should compare it with the iMate PDA2K or XDA III.... very similar capabilities.

imate is rather unpopular in singapore - it looks v much like the 02 mini.

I was checking some of the reviews of it, and it is a mixed bag of reviews. but most of the reviews seem to have come in before the ROM update.
