to return and buy anew?? per your request

1. What PDA and/or mobile phone do I use today?

SIEMENS SX66 (within first 30 days of contract - I can return it).
My problems with sx66 are I am afraid it will not be supported, I have Bluetooth 1.0 and don't know how to upgrade it and it is a bit large but I can live with tha and it is not EDGE capable (sorry - don't know how to word it, properly)

2. Are you locked into a mobile carrier (i.e. Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS, etc.), or do you prefer a particular carrier? Do you know if one carrier has better coverage in places that you need to be?

CINGULAR WITHIN FIRST 30 DAYS OF CONTRACT

3. Where are you based? Do you stay in one place or travel a lot? Do you travel internationally... how much and where? Do you intend to use your pdaPhone there?

Live in Arlington Heights, IL and don't travel alot but if I did, I'd want to use pdaphone

4. Do have a preference of Palm, Pocket PC, Symbian, Smartphone OS, Blackberry, etc.?

I don't have a preference, but prefer to sync with Outlook calendar and contacts if I can. Doesn't need to sync perfectly but would like it to sync easily. I have a POP3 account with Outlook as a client at work and I use Yahoo at home.

5. Are you likely to run it the way it came out of the box, or do you intend to load a whole lot of extra applications and stuff on it? Do you know of anything now that you will need to run?

I prefer not to do any crazy customization. I like notes and recording capabilities of sx66.

6. How important is wireless data access, and what would you use it for (i.e. web browsing, email, remote terminal access, AOL Instant Messenger, etc.)?

Wireles data is not absoultely important to me now as it could be in the future. But I would prefer to have a pdaphone that is EDGE capable.

7. Will you need to view Microsoft Office documents on the pdaPhone? Will you need to edit them?

Again, don't absolutely need to but would certainly like to have that capabilit. View, more important than edit.

8. Will you need to access a corporate email system? Will you do this while in a cradle (or via a sync cable), or do you need to do this while you are out of your office?

Not at this time.

9. Do you do SMS messaging a lot (telephone to telephone messaging)?

No.

10. Do you need a GPS for mapping and navigation?

No.

11. What is your size preference.. very close to the smallest cellphone, or you don’t care.. function over size?

The SX66 is pretty large and I have only used it for a week. It is a bit large for me, realistically, but I guess i could make it work if I had too.

12. How will you carry it... pocket, belt, purse, etc.?

Prefer in pocket or on belt (but smaller than SX66 if on belt)

13. Do you prefer a particular form factor… flip-phone, candy bar, etc?

I don't care for SX66 lak of protective screen. I like the fold-out capability in new Motorola MPx

14. Do you prefer a QWERTY keyboard, numeric dial-pad, or stylus?

QWERTY and numeric dial pad preferred.

15. Do you want to play a lot of video games on the pdaPhone? What kinds - puzzles, strategy, action adventure, etc.?

No.

16. Do you want to listen to music on the pdaPhone? What kind... mp3, streamed, etc.?

I do, but not pivotal.

17. Do you have any other hardware you intend to use with the pdaPhone? Do you intend to use any Bluetooth devices? What types of devices?

Definitely bluetooth. lots of time in the car.

18. What are your budget limits (pdaPhones range in price from below $100 for older used models to nearly $1000 for high end models without a carrier subisidy)?

I'll pay for carrier subsidy but prefer carrier with good phone capabilttities. Prefer to spend $400-$550.

After you post your answers, we will do our best to help you pick the right pdaPhone. This is a shortcut to doing the research at pdaPhoneHome to find all the details. Obviously, we are not responsible if you are not happy with the pdaPhone we recommend, so don't come back and shoot us if it doesn't work out. We are just trying to help!
I appreciate it...

The answers here are from our team of volunteers, so sometimes it takes a few days for us to get an answer in. In some cases, this is because we are doing some research, and in others we just haven't gotten to it. Be patient, we will answer everyone that has posted answers to these questions.

Most of our support team is US based, so our best information will be available for US carriers. But our total user base is global, and in most cases, other members of pdaPhoneHome will jump in and help if you are posting about another country.

The more information you can provide, the better we will be able to give an opinion. [color=firebrick][color=orangered][color=royalblue][color=seagreen][b][color=darkred]

I'm not sure what your question is. The SX66 is a brand new device and one of the best on the market. It is made by HTC, and is their third generation device in the XDA line. The same device is available in many flavors all over the world and the line is one of the most widely used (meaning a good accessory market). As far as upgrades go, rarely will you see a pdaPhone get upgraded because of the cost/benefits to the carrier. Don't expect it to happen. Bottom line is that the SX66 is the best thing out there at this point, so if you switched, I'm not sure what you'd switch too???? I have the CDMA version of the same device from Sprint PCS, which is the PPC6601. It lacks WiFi, but is otherwise the same platform from HTC. I love it. If I'm not getting to your question, please restate what you are looking for...

You mentioned the Motorola MPx, but as far as I know it hasn't been released yet. I do not know of any Pocket PC PDAphones that are EDGE capable at this time, and I don't live in an EDGE capable area, so no opportunity to test.

Mike is right, the SX66 is the best choice there is out there. The only other choice is to wait for a new device, but since the SX66 (and all of the other clones) is brand new, I wouldn't expect any new generations for at least another year.

EDGE technology is a dead end. it will never enjoy the level of support that GPRS does. at this point in time i would say that the practical life of an EDGE device is rather short.

let me explain why i think this. EDGE was deployed by AT&T wireless. cingular, who now owns AT&T wireless is upgrading to the more advanced UMTS/WCDMA type system. they have little interest in building out EDGE service because they are looking at the next step past EDGE already. it makes sense for them since EDGE is slower than the current 1Xrtt services offered by the CDMA carriers and the CDMA carriers are already upgrading to EV-DO services.

what about Tmobile, the other big GSM carrier? well they are not interested in EDGE at all and i wonder if they are even interested in WCDMA. Tmobile is most focused on building out WiFi hot spots and integrating those hot spots with existing GPRS service. they even have handsets planned for the future that will automatically look for a WiFi connection before it locks onto a GPRS connection. i would bet a dollar against a dime that EDGE is something that Tmobile will never ever do.

so what do you really get with EDGE? you get cingular supporting what AT&T already built but you don't get much of a future build out. IMHO chasing EDGE was like chasing an ISDN connection when DSL was rolling out all over america. it is a bet on a loosing horse.
