Treo 600 or Audiovox XV6600 on Verizon?
1. What PDA and/or mobile phone do I use today?
I use a Sony Clie NR70 and a Kyocera KX414. The Kyocera is a POS and I don't like carrying around two devices -- hence why I'm in the market for a smartphone.
2. Are you locked into a mobile carrier (i.e. Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS, etc.), or do you prefer a particular carrier? Do you know if one carrier has better coverage in places that you need to be?
All of the above -- I use Verizon, which I know limits my choices, but whatever.
3. Where are you based? Do you stay in one place or travel a lot? Do you travel internationally... how much and where? Do you intend to use your pdaPhone there?
I am in the US on the east coast. I do travel internationally, but don't bring either my PDA or my phone when I do.
4. Do have a preference of Palm, Pocket PC, Symbian, Smartphone OS, Blackberry, etc.?
I don't want a Blackberry, and as far as I know Symbian is not available for Verizon -- am I right? Also, I have been Palm up to now, but Pocket PC is intriguing and I might like to switch.
5. Are you likely to run it the way it came out of the box, or do you intend to load a whole lot of extra applications and stuff on it? Do you know of anything now that you will need to run?
I already have a lot of Palm apps that I use irregularly on my Clie, but I would be willing to get PPC versions. That is an added cost, though. I would play games, and would also if possible want software that keeps track of grades, syncs with Quicken, etc.
6. How important is wireless data access, and what would you use it for (i.e. web browsing, email, remote terminal access, AOL Instant Messenger, etc.)?
I would not use it at all. I would like a recommendation that is not based at all on that. I also know that the XV6600 has Bluetooth and the Treo doesn't, but that is also not important.
7. Will you need to view Microsoft Office documents on the pdaPhone? Will you need to edit them?
I will probably at least want to view them. I currently have Documents to Go for the Palm, and obviously the PPC has Pocket Word and Excel.
8. Will you need to access a corporate email system? Will you do this while in a cradle (or via a sync cable), or do you need to do this while you are out of your office?
No, that isn't necessary, but if I can sync with Outlook to have a copy of my emails, that would be nice.
9. Do you do SMS messaging a lot (telephone to telephone messaging)?
No, not at all.
10. Do you need a GPS for mapping and navigation?
No.
11. What is your size preference.. very close to the smallest cellphone, or you don’t care.. function over size?
I would like smaller size, but overall I am a function-over-size person.
12. How will you carry it... pocket, belt, purse, etc.?
I will probably pocket it.
13. Do you prefer a particular form factor… flip-phone, candy bar, etc?
Flip-phone would be nice, but none of them have keyboards, so I will go with the form factor that does.
14. Do you prefer a QWERTY keyboard, numeric dial-pad, or stylus?
Qwerty keyboard, without question.
15. Do you want to play a lot of video games on the pdaPhone? What kinds - puzzles, strategy, action adventure, etc.?
Yes -- anything that entertains me. Probably mostly puzzle games, though.
16. Do you want to listen to music on the pdaPhone? What kind... mp3, streamed, etc.?
No, I have an iPod for that.
17. Do you have any other hardware you intend to use with the pdaPhone? Do you intend to use any Bluetooth devices? What types of devices?
Nope, nothing. (As you can see I have modest needs.)
18. What are your budget limits (pdaPhones range in price from below $100 for older used models to nearly $1000 for high end models without a carrier subisidy)?
Verizon doesn't exactly have any phones beyond $550, and since that's how much the XV6600 costs, that's my limit. I would like to spend less, though, so my question is really whether the XV6600 justifies the extra money over the Treo.
