TP2 or Omnia 2 - what to upgrade from i760

I love my i760 and I have had it for two years now, but I'd love to have a WMP phone with much larger screen. I am unsure about having the slide out keyboard or not.

My options are TP2 which is out already or Omnia 2.

The Omnia supposed to have even a better screen than TP2 and it's lighter, thinner and has 5MP cam with HD video (1/2 of 720P I think). On the downside I read it looks and feels cheap, with low grade plastic.

TP2 of course is supposed to be very high grade.

Thinking only between the TP2 and O2, which would you vote for?

I am at 2 years too and have the phone itch. But I think I am going to hold out / hold off for now. It will be nice to go "off contract", even for just a month or two. I am trying to figure out who / why the Omnia Pro I7610 is not going to be available in the good ole USA? It appears to be a much more compatible replacement with the slide out keyboard. I really don't want to go to no keyboard. If I wanted to do than and get crappie service I would just get an iPhone....

I think the i7610 is not coming to the US because no US carrier picked it up.. my guess is Vzw decided to go with the TP2 for its biz class PDA phone with a keyboard.... They seem to not carry a wide selection of that type phone probably because is doesn't represent a big sector of their customer base, though we would like to think we are more important than that..heh heh.

@ shiva.. neither of those phones are being sold in the stores yet so you can only speak from what others have said ... I would wait until they both hit the stores and you can compare them yourself. For my use the TP2 hands down because I require a physical keyboard... not a on screen keyboard for my work... If I were to compare all the specs I would still choose the TP2.. but I've not held either phone, so I would take my opinion with a grain of salt.

thanks for your comments. I ordered the i760 the first morning it became available, but on the TP2, I am waiting a little, mainly because I want the phone with WM 6.5. I don't want to have to take a 6.1 phone to the VZW store later on and have to explain to them what to do and get the deer in the headlights look. I almost never visit their stores, I do everything on the web. then of course came the news of the Omnia 2, and it looks damn good on paper. so, plan is to go to a Tmobile store and see the TP2, as first step.

but frankly my i760 works great, so I am in no rush.

I saw the TP2 at TMobile and this is one sweet phone. I thought it was gonna be heavy, thick and large, but it's basically the same size as the i760... very impressed by how compact it is...

I'm holding out for the Omnia. The keyboard isn't that important for me.

Funny thing from your quote above about build quality. The Samsungs generally seem to have, by consensus, a significantly higher build quality and feel than the HTC devices like the TP etc.

So from that angle, what you're saying about feel/cheapness etc. is exactly opposite of what I read as a general opinion. Same with our current i760's , most love the build quality but hate that they did the proprietary connector and we don't have cooked ROM's like the HTC devices.

Ya gotta get with the Lingo! Cooked ROM are customized firmware versions.

WinstonSmith,

A cooked ROM is basically:

1. dangerous if you don't know anything about it.

2. It is basically replacing the 'out of the box' configuration of the operating system (WinMo xxx) plus the add-ons and/or disfigurations (done by VZW) with either one you build your self or one somebody else built.

You're hacking your phone to remove the crap you don't want, add what you do as defaults (like Opera Mini as browser instead of IE), and possibly fixing VZW ruining your life (by disabling GPS in a phone that has it physically).

This is extremely common and well known and documented in the HTC (TP2, etc.) community, but less so with the Samsung devices, though the Omnia community seems to have achieved more here than we have with the i760.

Beware though, you could brick your phone. Get well-read in this area before going off and mucking about with it.

One item I like with the Omnia is the FM radio. I work as a part time radio DJ and having a extra set of ears is PERFECT for me.

I am not going with the Omnia. I was waiting for VZW to get a update to the 760 but that isnt going to happen.

I am not big on the HTC phones but the TP2 is the closest thing to what I need. As a Day 1 Adopter of the I730 and then I760, I really like the Samsung Phones but what can I do if VZW will not carry what I need.

Anyone know if the TP2 requires the stupid separate plugin for headphones like so many of the HTC models?

Dean

PS: If they still had new I760s in stock, I would replace my current one but it is starting to have hardware issues as I reimaged the phone and it still has bugs without the third party software. ARRGGH.

Anyone given any thought to the 3(?) Android phones supposedly coming out? I too am happy with my 760 and my contract is up however Winmo leaves much to be desired especially in its current form...

I went ahead and ordered the TP2. VZW business department has them in stock but they are out of stock for consumers.

What a load of crap from VZW. I called and ordered my TP 2 and asked if I had them in stock because the website showed they were out. However, since I am a business customer they said they have different inventories and they ar ein stock. I was on the phone for 30 minutes with the account rep and she went through all the info and even got my credit card info to order.

She then said the TP2 is no longer in stock and she called 5 of the warehouses and VZW doesnt have any of them.

The first thing I did when I called was asked if they have the TP2.

I can pay $150 + shipping for a new I-760 on ebay now but I am going to wait and get that TP2. It really appears to better quality than a lot of the HTC phones and it generally gets good reviews from the business crowd.

I am going to do another hard reset on my I760 and install a minimum of addons and hope it works until I get the TP2.

I would love to stay with Samsung but the Omnia has no keyboard and the Saga keys are too small for my fingers and I dont like the look are feel of it. It feels much cheaper than other Samsung devices.

Has anyone researched the Rogue? I glanced at it and it seemed interesting, but I wonder if others may have looked a bit deeper.

Correct me if I am wrong but that is not a Windows Mobile Phone which kills it for me since my company uses Exchange and I live off the OTA sync of contacts, appointments, tasks, etc. Also, I noticed it only had a 1000 contact phone book which is not enough for me.

Saw today that the Omnia 2 is shipping with WinMo 6.1 and while it will receive the 6.5 update it may be quite some time before it ships. That is disappointing.

The 6.5 update does not mean that much to me.. Quite honestly, I have a few 3rd party apps that makes the phones work the way I want them. Besides, most of the companies have added their own apps now to bypass the weaknesses of Windows Mobile.

I can live with 6.1 until the upgrade comes out. I had to upgrade the I730 to Winmo 6 and it was no big deal really.

I am concerned that the WinMo 6.5 will not allow self signed certs anyways which I can still get away with with WinMo 6.1

I also dont need an app store. If I wanted to be charged out the butt for stuff I didnt need, I would have gotten and iPhone after they finally have figured out cut and paste
