Sadly, I think my i760 has reached the end of its rope. I have been getting the memory card errors several times a day lately and it has become almost useless unless it is cradled. Now, when it is cradled the USB port keeps telling me it has gotten a power surge. I do not care to rememedy either of these problems; it's time for a new phone.
I have been a little out of touch with the technology since I bought this phone two years ago. I see there is a new i770 Saga that looks decent and a whole series of HTC phones that I know NOTHING about. I would like something similar to my i760 with Windows Mobile 6.1 or better but I am not sure which phone is the best. Certainly one of you has tasted them all and can make a recommendation?
I occasionally use the excel and word features so I want to stay with a WM device. I use SMS a lot but I hate t9 so a workable qwerty solution is preferable. I like to use my phone as an mp3 player for my semi-annual workout and for that I like stereo headphones. I like a nice cradle where I can charge the phone and use Jeyo to send SMS from Outlook. I sync my phone several times a day to my outlook (cradle only - not through exchange). Beyond that, I don't really care about other features, although I am addicted to bubble breaker. A decent camera would be nice but not critical; the i760 camera blows hard.
Short of researching for days on my own and still probably making a bad decision, what phone do you all recommend? My NE2 is up for what it's worth and they seem to remind me of that thrice daily.
I just did the NE2 on my 760 and got a HTC Touch Pro 2. Very nice phone. Does everything the 760 did just a little better. Has a great screen and the touch stuff works well.
The downside that I'm still missing from my 760 is the dpad. But you do get used to it after awhile I guess. The TP2 has a real headphone jack you can plug any regular set of headphones into for MP3 playback, and it also suports bluetooth stereo. The camera is 3MP but not great... higher MP but slow to take pics and no 'flash' like the 760 had. Also doesn't come with a cradle, but there are 3rd party cradles out there for the GSM versions of this phone so it's a matter of time before one comes out for the Sprint/VZW version.
I'm holding out for the Omina II. I'm leery about not having any keyboard/dpad but we'll see. Worst comes to worst, I'll take it back, hard reset the i760 and live with it until something better comes along...
The Touch Pro2 seems like the clear winner if you're wanting to stay with Verizon right now. It's the best rated smartphone on both Verizon and Sprint currently.
I was considering leaving for the iPhone, but the Touch Pro2 just might be enough to get me to stay. I'm going to wait for the rumored WinMo 6.5 upgrade though.
I'm eye balling the TP2 as well... I tried to like the Omnia .. but without even a physical Keyboard I couldn't see it as a viable option for me. Alas Verizon has gone with the TP2 has the next business class PDA phone with a keyboard so that's really my only choice. From what I've read I'm glad HTC's build quality has gotten better with the TP line, but there is a lot of grumbling from former i760ers about the lack of a d-pad.

Luck is where opportunity meets preparation.
After some deliberation and the results of my queries here, I went online to order the HTC Touch Pro 2 on Tuesday. Unfortunately, VZW's system was experienceing some issues and and the order errorred out several times (page was unavailable when I tried to checkout) so I called Verizon to finish up the order. It took some haggling to convince them I was not interested in a mail in rebate since it was their system's fault the order could not be pushed through online. The CSR reluctantly gave me the online price and "instant rebate" and the new phone was slated to arrive the next day (yesterday). The next day came and went without delivery of my new phone. Meanwhile every incoming call was locking up my hopelessly overwhelmed i760.
I finally called today (two days later) about my new phone and apparently the order had been "denied" for reasons unapparent to anyone but they would happily redo the order for me. The CSR thought it may have had something to do with my corporate discount or perhaps the fact that they were trying to do the online price. However, since today is Thursday and it is after 4pm EST they could not get the phone to me until Tuesday of next week (making it one week later before I would have a new phone). I tried to go up the chain to the supervisors, etc but all this cost me was more time on hold and after about an hour I finally got disgusted and told them I would be shopping for a new phone with another provider. They also tried to locate it locally for me, but of course this model is not available at any retail locations.
A simple phone call telling me my order had not gone through might have prevented all this. Instead I stared at my front door for a day and a half waiting for a package that was never shipped. And while they did apologize, my customer service stanards are too high to accept simply an apology that is not accompanied by some kind of monetary or "in-kind" remuneration. Is that unreasonable?
In the meantime I have reactivated a spare replacement i760 I had kicking around that, although beatup, actually works. I would like to try out this new phone but at this point I am so disenchanted that I am seriously considering another carrier. I really do not want to leave Verizon but I feel compelled to do based on this experience. What do you all think? Is there a "go to" person or special number I can call where I might achieve some satisfaction or is my best bet just to go elsewhere?

Reason: I cannot spell
Based on what I've read here and other forums, your threatening them to leave isn't going to hurt them or pull out a "well hold on Mr. Customer, we'll give you X amount of dollars back", they could care less. They'll do what they feel is reasonable to keep you and if you go elsewhere, so be it. You might just have to chalk it up to a mistake on their part and move on (either with or without VZW).
It sucks but it's the nature of the phone business. Verizon has screwed me over before (a month of no service after a brush fire took out towers in AZ years and years ago, they said oh well) and while I went elsewhere, the service was the same where I went and I was dropping calls like crazy, so I came back. VZW has the best network and they know it.
There may be some from Sammy if I'm not mistaken, but out of the blue it's Motorolla's phone that has me intrigued. Supposed to be quite powerful and full-featured. ? Can I trust Motorolla to put together a quality device? I do like their headset:
I read about the other possible Android phones, but the specs on this blow them away iirc. Most powerful Android phone yet (on par with iPhone 3Gs)

Quote:
they plan to "codevelop" Android-based devices that will be pre-loaded with their applications
OH CRAP! VZW keep your hands off my hardware! They going to disable the GPS and throw on VZW Navigator support are they? I'm sorry, but please just give us the new devices - provide service - and keep your mits off!

The Imagio is (on the inside) basically the same thing as the Touch Pro2, only without the keyboard but add a 5MP camera. However, what is the point of a 5MP camera without a flash?!?! The Imagio has better hardware buttons though. The Processor is still around 500mhz and the RAM&ROM is still kinda wimpy. I don't really care about the Touch Flo3D interface, its just bloated eye candy that you can really get on any WM phone (thanks XDAdev). By most accounts, the speaker quality on both phones is about the same as the i760. So if its good enough to last you for two years, go for it, but you may have some remorse in the next year. One last thing, I've seen some rather disappointing reports of people being stuck in 1x all over the US, which makes me upchuck in my mouth a little.
WARNING RANT SESSION BELOW!! as if the above wasn't a rant ;P
I'm waiting for a device with a modern Processor and MOAR ram&rom. The HTC HD2 was just announced, not on any carrier yet though, and it has a full 1gig Processor (snapdragon) and a capacative touch screen (not an "enhanced" resistive screen like the OmniaII) and its still a WM phone (I'm guessing WM7). I dunno if I can wait a year or two to get it though. I like the Motorola Android phone that VZW did an unveiling for recently. But, VZW says they are going to "work together" with Moto and Google to build the OS, which tells me that this phone will come out some time shortly after the rapture. Really the OmniaII has an 800mhz Processor and good ram&rom, but the touchwiz UI is kinda useless. I don't use widgets on my desktop or laptop, not in Linux, Mac OS X, or Window$7. Why would I use it on the relatively tiny interface of a handheld device? WM5 had an awesome home screen that you could mod with XML, I loved that!! I want that back. I am so over trying to figure out what to do for my NE2, I may just keep my i760 until a few faster more powerful handhelds come out. Either that, or I'll just go with a dumb phone and a UMPC.
Hope that helps!!
Sorry I didn't spell check or anything.

Agreed, there's really nothing that would make my i760 feel obsolete or out of date, really. I have a netbook and an iPod and I'd be fine with a dumb phone if I didn't want to carry around multiple gadgets everywhere. I'll be looking at the Hero and Sholes, however (I'll wait till they are out in the field for a while of course).

Yeah, I'd probably settle for the Motorola Sholes if it came out like within the next month and I saw good reviews from the field.
Essentially, I really just don't want to waste my "new every two"/"chance to end my contract" on something that will be obsolete in six months. There really isn't anything out there on any carrier that is a true upgrade from the i760, my opinion of course, or I'd jump ship for that.
Oh well, I am probably placing way too much importance on this decision when its really just a new toy. Its not like I can't get what I need out of VZW's current selection, its just that its not what I want. But darn it! I never get to buy anything for me. That's the part of being a "adult" that I despise. This is the one thing that I can actually justify buying as both a necessity and a frivolous geek tech toy. So I really want it to be uber l33t kewlness with all sorts of buttons and sparkly rainbow colored unicorns that fly out of the screen with a simple voice command. I know its childish and probably too much to expect, but its what I want, not what I need.
I guess I'll have to give up on being all tense about this issue and just have to wait. I hate to wait. Oh well.

Totally right there with you bro. Personally, the phone I'd want right now if it were possible would be the n900, but that's not going to happen. All things considered I'm pretty happy with VZW so if you're happy I'd wait till something came out that got you excited.

I am trying to determine what next one will be. The ones I'm looking at:
- Imagio
- Omnia 2
- Droid (just made my list)
- Pre (apparently coming to VZW early 2010)
