Hey,
I'm in the market for a new phone, but i can wait a few months for some of the new phones to come out. I saw that some people are filling out the form, so here goes.
1. What PDA and/or mobile phone do you use today?
Verizon XV6700
2. Are you locked into a mobile carrier (i.e. Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS, etc.), or do you prefer a particular carrier? Do you know if one carrier has better coverage in places that you need to be?
Not really locked, but i get way better service at my house on verizon compared to all the other carriers.
3. Where are you based? Do you stay in one place or travel a lot? Do you travel internationally... how much and where? Do you intend to use your
PDAPhone there?
Central San Diego. Don't travel much, don't care about international service.
4. Do have a preference of Palm,
Pocket PC, Symbian, Smartphone OS, Blackberry, etc.?
I like the windows operating system, and need to have excel and outlook on the phone. Android might be an option.
5. Are you likely to run it the way it came out of the box, or do you intend to load a whole lot of extra applications and stuff on it? Do you know of anything now that you will need to run?
Not much. I try to keep the install clean and fast with minimal extra crap.
6. How important is wireless data access, and for what would you use it? (i.e. Web browsing, VPN, Remote termnial Access, Instant messaging, etc)?
Very important. I'm on the internet all the time using forums like this for a business i run (automotive related). Email is very important and i need pop and imap access. Speed is key, the faster the better.
7. Will you need to view Microsoft Office documents on the
PDAPhone? Will you need to edit them?
Yes, i need to view and edit mostly excel files.
8. Will you need access to an email system?
Yes. I get 30-50 emails per day.
a)Is it corporate (Exchange, Groupwise,Lotus, Other?) What Version? Do you want email wirelessly or do you want to do it in the office with a sync cable/cradle? Can you get your Corporate email configured for mobile access or do you need to run a desktop redirector?
Need wireless from pop or imap. No corporate email server stuff needed.
b)Is it Pop3/Imap? Who is the service provider?
Yes, imap and pop.
9. Do you do SMS messaging a lot (telephone to telephone messaging)?
Not too much, mostly email.
10. Do you want to use a GPS with the
PDAPhone for mapping and navigation?
Yes, Hopefully it can replace my nuvi gps and needs good turn by turn navigation with quick reroutes.
11. What is your size preference.. very close to the smallest cellphone, or you don’t care.. function over size?
Function over size, but umpcs like the htc advantage are just a little too big. It should fit in a big pocket. about 5" x3" x 3/4" would be the MAX size. My xv6700 is heavy and big, but i would go heavier and bigger for a faster phone with a bigger screen.
12. How will you carry it... pocket, belt, purse, etc.?
pocket.
13. Do you prefer a particular form factor… flip-phone, candy bar, etc?
No
14. Do you prefer a QWERTY keyboard, numeric dial-pad, or stylus?
Needs full qwerty keyboard for lots of typing. 5 row with real numbers is a plus.
15. Do you want to play a lot of video games on the
PDAPhone? What kinds - puzzles, strategy, action adventure, etc.?
No.
16. Do you want to listen to music on the
PDAPhone? What kind... mp3, streamed, etc.?
Yes. mp3 only. 2-4gb is enough. A full size headphone jack would be great, but not needed.
17. Do you want a camera on the
PDAPhone?
Not a big deal. I use a camera for pictures, and rarely use my phone because the pictures suck.
18. Do you have any other hardware you intend to use with the
PDAPhone? Do you intend to use any Bluetooth devices? What types of devices?
No
19. What kind of battery life do you need?(Always near a charger, battery life is not an issue or Need the battery to last several days) How many hours do you expect to spend talking on the phone? How many hours of data?(Web browsing, push email, VPN, IM etc)
Lots of data, not a lot of talking. It should last a full day with moderate use. I use the usb AA chargers if i need more on the go power. My xv6700 will last a day with moderate to heavy use.
20. What are your budget limits (
PDAPhones range in price from below $100 for older used models to nearly $1000 for high end models without a carrier subisidy)?
No real budget, i'd gladly pay $1000 for a pda phone if it had some
Processor power and loads of ram.
So far i have it pretty much narrowed down the the
HTC Touch Pro, and the Sony Experia, but i was also thinking about waiting for an android phone. I really like all the google applications and think that android might be worth the wait. I don't need tons of tricks and pretty screen transitions, just raw speed and loads of ram so its not telling me to close programs all the time and slowing to a crawl. Being able to have more than one website open at a time would be a huge plus. A tiny UMPC with a built in phone may be an option, but i haven't found anything small enough. I'm totally open for recommendations so please help me out if you know about some cool stuff coming out before the year end.
