Apple will debut the
iPhone in the United Kingdom and Germany on Friday. This will be the first time the device is available from anyone except AT&T Wireless in the United States. There were rumors that Apple would show up in Europe with a 3G enabled version of the
iPhone, but that turned out to be false. The 8GB
iPhone is going to cost 269 pounds in the U.K.($563.87 as of this writing) and 399 euros ($583.84), and be virtually identical to the US model. The phone will be simultaneously available in Germany and the UK from T-Mobile and O2.
Apple will also be officially releasing OS X 1.1.2 for the
iPhone on Friday, however it can be downloaded now from a link at Engadget
HERE. According to their testing, there were noticable new features available, however it did break Jailbreak. Apple says that this release is to add support for an "international
iPhone", so it may not be worth upgrading to this version if you are an existing
iPhone user in the US.
Later in November, the
iPhone will be available in France from Orange. According to reports, Apple may be forced to unlock the
iPhone for France since French law requires carriers to unlock their phones for free after six months if the customer requests it. Given recent trends in the US, locking seems to be slowly going away, but not quite yet.
