I look at the idea that Mozilla will bring us Firefox Mobile for our PDAPhones, and it makes me pretty happy. I am a Windows Mobile guy and it is incredibly frustrating that Microsoft has done almost nothing to Pocket Internet Explorer since the first
Pocket PC came out years ago. Maybe the entry of Firefox will get their attention since that is the browser they compete with the most on the desktop.
I've tried a lot of browsers, and find that they are all kind of weak. The
iPhone has done a great job of showing what can be done on a small screen to make you productive. While I'm not completely in love with that one either, I at least give them credit for being innovative. On the Windows Mobile platform, I've tried Pocket Internet Explorer, NetFront, ftxPBrowser, Thunderhawk, Opera Mini, and Piscel. I've also tried a number of add-ons for PIE and proxies that shrink your screen for you on the fly (Skweezer). To be honest, they are all kind of weak at the end of the day. Probably my favorite is Piscel, but you can't even buy that... its only available with Samsung phones. What we need is some serious player to get in the game and make an open browser that makes people productive. I'd think that either Mozilla or Google would have the best chance of success (see GPhone story).
So apparantly Minimo, Mozilla's first attempt at this is dead... deemed just an experiment. What is to follow will be something that is aimed to competed with those I listed, the
iPhone's browser, and anything else that comes down the road. I'd settle for something that is quick, easy to zoom in and out, and designed to integrate into the OS to replace the default... i.e., Pocket Internet Explorer with Windows Mobile. What about you? What browser do you use and what do you like most about it? What would you like to see in the next best mobile browser?
