Two of the biggest rumors that have been floating around hear for months are when Verizon Wireless will release the Samsung SCH-i760, and when Sprint will release a ROM update for the PPC-6800 Mogul. Could they both end up happening in the span of a week? Could they happen before Halloween? Lets all hope so. Our new server is anxious and ready to go!
Day before yesterday the Boy Genius Report posted a leaked list of the
big super secret list of new handsets that Verizon Wireless has been teasing everyone with for weeks. Included in the list are a dozen or so handsets, but the ones relevent to us are:
- Samsung SCH-i760, October 19
- Palm Treo 755P, November 1
- Blackberry Pearl 8130, November 1
Then today, BGR reported that Sprint will be released the much
anticipated ROM update for the Mogul on October 22. No word in either case on when and if the Mogul will ever make it out the door for Verizon Wireless. Ironically, I posted a review of the Treo 755P from Sprint here in May... that's going to be 6 months later... if it makes it out on that date. If Verizon and Sprint both lag the other carriers in PDAPhone technology because the are CDMA and GSM gets all the latest devices. But Verizon seems to add another big lag on top of that for their on launch process. Our recent front page PDAPhoneHome poll of over 1,000 members found that a whopping 70% are either already switching or planning to switch to another carrier because of the technology lag. Verizon has ridden their "its the network" horse for a long time, and as the other carriers catch of there, they need to rethink their PDAPhone release process.
So, back to the Mogul update. BGR is saying that a "new ROM is coming, complete with a number of bug fixes and feature enhancements that Mogul owners have been clamoring for quite a while now". They go on to say that the much needed Bluetooth update will be included to address stability and sound quality. Many Mogul owners have reported big problems with this, while others have had none (myself and other PDAPhoneHome team members included). While no other enhancements were identified, we can speculate that maybe some new features might be enabled. Perhaps the internal GPS might be turned on? I suppose that would be too much to hope for, but we can always dream.
