What's the Best Platform for Writing Your Own Mobile Apps?
So you are a hobbiest programmer and want to give mobile computing a try? There are so many platforms out there, so which do you pick? Vivek has put together kind of an informal "shoot-out" of the most popular mobile development platforms. Included in the article are the iPhone, Windows Mobile, Palm, Symbian, Java, Linux, Blackberry, and Brew.
Vivek likes Windows Mobile and gives his reasons why.
"As of today I would put my money on windows mobile. With the best development tools and ease of debugging no other platform can come close to it. But in terms of numbers Java ME takes the cake. So as of today if I wanted numbers I would develop my next hypothetical "killer application" in Java ME. But if I wanted to develop just for the joy of programming, I would prefer windows mobile."
What makes this more interesting, however, is that his article got picked up by Slashdot and so he received a lot of comment and debate.... so much so, that he today came out with an update to the article in order to respond to all the disagreement and comments.
What do you think? What do you think is the best development platform for the hobbiest? Personally, I don't think that Vivek missed the mark.
