<img src="images/logo-microsoft.gif" align="right">This MSDN Webcast was held on June 23, but you can now listen to it as a playback. The webcast was presented by Neil Enns, Lead Program Manager for Mobile Devices Product Group, Microsoft Corporation.

Description

This session will provide a technical overview of what's new and upcoming for the Pocket PC and Smartphone development platforms. It provides context and level set for many of the more advanced sessions. We will focus on key new features for mobile software developers, starting from the underlying Windows CE OS, to Pocket PC and Smartphone Shell, Networking, Telephony, Messaging and Device Management features and extensibility points. This session will also cover important changes and roadmap to the related Development Tools (embedded Visual C++ and Visual Studio .NET), SDKs, emulators and supported runtimes.

I watched this recording which gave quite a bit of detail on the WMPE 2003 upgrade from a development perspective. This presentation really confirms what I had heard before: this upgrade from WIN CE 3.0 to WIN CE 4.2 is like going from Windows 98 to Windows NT! Even though it is getting the reputation as just an incremental upgrade under the hood it is more of a major revamping of the software.

This new upgrade will fully support the development of programs for it from the same managed .NET environment (using C# or VB.NET among other languages) as the developers use for other Windows applications. You can still of course use other low level coding options which have also gotten an upgrade.

This upgrade will make it easier for developers to crank out many more 3rd party apps for our PPC devices! Hope we can all get this upgrade to WMPE 2003 soon!
