*NEWSFLASH* LG To License Palm OS For PDA Phones!

This is definitely great news for Palmsource, and for all of us PDA phone geeks, especially as rumors abound that Samsung will no longer licensing the Palm OS, leaving PalmOne as the sole manufacturer of Palm OS PDA phones.
Here is part of today's press release, "SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 6, 2005 — LG Electronics, Inc., (Korea Stock Exchange: 06657.KS) and PalmSource Inc., (NASDAQ: PSRC) provider of Palm OS®, a leading operating system powering next generation phones and mobile devices today announced that LG Electronics has signed an agreement to license Palm OS worldwide. Under terms of the agreement, LG Electronics can develop and market smartphones based on Palm OS..."

I think this just about clears the way for "Palm" to release a WM Treo. I say within 6 weeks, they'll annouce one.

If a WM Treo became available, I might have to put my i730 up for sale!

I don't see the connection between this news release and a Windows Mobile Treo. Please explain.

By the way, I've already written LG asking them to develop a clamshell for orphaned 7135 users and they responded positively.

As the parting of the ways goes, PalmSource is free to use other hardware manufacturers and Palm is free to use other software developers. You will see an LG competitor to the Treo line and Palm will enter the PPC market. They both get a chance to expand their markets.

The only "parting of the ways" in the news release is between Samsung and Palmsource. How does that make "Palm free to use other software developers"?

I'm sorry, that news story goes with the one from the previous week about how Palm has a new agreement with Palmsource but that it is non-exclusive, meaning Palm can work with whoever they want. That coupled with Palmsource signing up new mfgs signals the split will lead to new products from both sides. There were quite a few stories about the new Palm deal a few weeks ago, I just assumed it was common knowledge, my bad.

if that is the case then Palm should change their name as it just doesn't make sense to have a Palm Windows Mobile phone. It's an oxymoron.

there is a treo coming w/WIN MOB. No more Palm os for that device. LG electronics signed a deal with palm to put that os on their devices.
A Japanese company bought Palm about a month ago and is now able to do whatever it wants. They have signed an agreement with Windows mobile.

do you ever read more than one thing before making statements? They are making a Treo 700W and a Treo 700P. One will be Windows Mobile and the other will be a Palm OS. Palm has not abandoned the Palm OS. I do think it's just plain stupid to have the name Palm on a windows device. They should just be Treo, plain and simple, if they are not going to stay true to the OS.

On a personal note, I don't know how long I can stick with Sprint and my i500. Have had too many service outages, and the lack of call info when out of the service area is becoming a big hassle for work. Might be looking into the Motorola Q and jumping ship to Verizon or Cingular. I wonder how quick LG will be to show a Palm phone.
