T-Mobile Smells the Coffee, Allies With Google, Notes T-Zones DOA

This Reuters article reprinted by Extremetech notes T-Mobile will add the Google landing page to new devices with larger screens, for their Eurocustomers.

Quote:
BONN (Reuters)—Deutsche Telekom's mobile arm T-Mobile will use Web search leader Google as the starting point for surfing the Internet on its mobile phones to promote Internet usage, T-Mobile said on Wednesday. BONN (Reuters)—Deutsche Telekom's mobile arm T-Mobile will use Web search leader Google as the starting point for surfing the Internet on its mobile phones to promote Internet usage, T-Mobile said on Wednesday.

T-Mobile, Europe's second-largest mobile operator, is moving to provide full Internet access on its phones, abandoning the unpopular "walled garden" concept in which operators give access to their own choice of Web sites.
But, wait, there's more, and it's good, too....
Quote:
Mobile operators have failed for years to convince subscribers to use their phones for more than calls and text messages. As voice call prices fall, they need to compensate with revenues from Internet usage and other services. But the vast majority of customers shun mobile Internet services such as T-Mobile's "t-zones" or market leader Vodafone's "Live!." Those who use them do so rarely, and customer surveys show they do not see much use in them.
So, T-Mobile's got a clue! They're planning for a European market push with the Sidekick II, Nokia's 6680, and two PDAs to be named later. Larger screen size was named as a must.

This is why people don't use TZones

"But the vast majority of customers shun mobile Internet services such as T-Mobile's "t-zones" or market leader Vodafone's "Live!." Those who use them do so rarely, and customer surveys show they do not see much use in them"

The SINGLE most citable reason why users in the US do NOT use Wireless Data services from TMobile is because the connection speeds are DEPLORABLE. The second most citable reason is that there is practically NO ( < 1% ) usable content ON the TZones USA site. Other than a way to get to corporate email ( and that's pushing it ), it's almost totally useless.

Accessing Yahoo mail is practically impossible ( in Miami, anyway ). Messenger, AIM, all those things are way too slow. Even accessing their supposed "News and Weather" channels are to slow to even bother to use.

If TMobile ever really does hope of capturing revenue from the Data side of the house, within the United States, they not only need to get their EDGE network in order, but they really have to start thinking that sticking with HSDPA only for Europe is a ridiculous notion. Otherwise, they'll just become a second-rate wireless carrier within North America.

Sure, you get more minutes, but there comes a point where you don't need to talk, and you want to look something up. It's about time TMobile USA woke up and decided to "buck the system", and shore up it's data networks. If it's too late to get GPRS to work, then at least make sure that your EDGE network lives up to it's speed potential !

'nuff said....
