According to an article on MSNBC , it appears that Verizon is aiming at pre-empting the Sprint/Nextel merger by buying Sprint and has talked with Vodafone to get the OK to do so... wow!
I agree... while VZ may put an offer out there, there is no way VZ would get the gov't approvals to consumate the deal. Too much overlap. And if by chance it does snow in hell, Cingular here I come.

I wouldn't be so sure they wouldn't get the approval... there are more choices today than there were last year, so the feds may just cave in....

This possibility has been raised before. I doubt that it will ever happen. However, it makes more sense to me than the potential of a Sprint/Nextel merger. At least Sprint and Verizon play in the same protocol playground...
Do verizon and Sprint use the same type of network? What I mean to ask is, if a merger does happen, will Verizon phones work on Sprint towers and vice-versa? I always thought Sprint PCS was a different system. If they are different, then there would be no real change in the size of Verizon's service area or the phones that could be used on the Verizon system.
If I'm wrong (and I suspect that I am) could someone explain it for me.

First of all, it appears as though the Nextel aquisition by Sprint is going to happen, so any suggestion that Sprint would be aquired by Verizon is not likely to happen (at least anytime soon). Secondly, Verizon and Sprint use the same networking protocol (CDMA) so they could share a common infrastructure. The same is NOT true for Sprint and Nextel however. The ComputerWorld article I posted here earlier today suggests that as a consequence of the Nextel aquisition, existing Nextel customers would migrate to the Sprint network, but how that is going to happen is a mystery to me. This aquisition is going to be difficult and complicated!

Well Verizon wireless & Spring PCS uses same network technology, but currently they do not share the bandwidth.
