March Madness - pdaPhone Style!
Convergent

OK, while I've been glued to the tube watching some great NCAA men's college hoop, a different "March Madness" has quietly been taking place over at CNet. They have developed an interesting way to vote for your favorite...
for the record mr. "baton", the i7 has nothing to do with the quality of the sound so much as the actual player. you can find the same or better music player in a non smartphone..
Originally posted by JohnTheBaton I'm sorry if I have come off a little strong. This is all in good fun, and I like being passionate about my toys. To rephrase what I said above, we'll all be ashamed in 5 years of how pitiful these devices are and how much we prided them at the time!
Originally posted by Convergent On this, I think we can all agree.
When I get into conversations with people about computers in the "old days", we laugh at how little power they had compared to what we have today... but, at the same time, we still have an appreciation for how cutting edge they were at that time
It'll be fun to have similar conversations about pdaPhones in a few years
I paid $4999.99 for a desktop!!!!. It was cutting edge. It cut my fingers and my bank account in half!!! Ah yes RobertK,I remember watching my GREEN screen, standing back with a can of beer and seeing the face of my brother-in-law I had reached and touched the clouds and returned from the cutting edge!!!. I bet 5 years from now, i700---- what the heck was that

its all in the codecs son..
I have to admit I hadn't realized that. Just because I like the quality doesn't mean I know a first thing about how or why! I am curious, what do you consider to be the best codec/best quality portable listening device?
a lame mp3 with the alt preset standard settings seem to be the norm these days. If you really want to delve deeply into it, go fry your brain at www.hyrdogenaudio.org.
What would I do when I want to watch DVD's on an airplane? [/b][/quote]
Hey, John, I'm curious about this (this is a serious question, not anymore of my trash-talkin'): how do the movies look on the i7? Maybe this is a better post in the i7 forum, but since you brought it up, I thought I'd ask. Is the sound good as well (granted, the headphones must deliver in that area too)? Is it choppy at all? How long does the battery last when watching a converted DVD?
Originally posted by Convergent I also don't believe in running, walking fast, or doing any other exercise. You never saw anyone get hurt by sitting in a chair... look at all the people that hurt themselves while exercising!
Truer words have never been spoken...ha ha
Of course, it would be nice if I didn't get winded from blinking too quickly...

Actually, the movies look suprisingly good, but not as good as on newer non-pda phones. It's the best I've seen on a PDAPhone, but I haven't tried the Hitachi G1000. The i700 has a 300mHz processor, so I have to overclock the device, but I am able to get 250kb compression (I've don'e more, but the file size is too big). At this bitrate the audio sounds excellent, but the video suffers a little pixelation. The i700 comes with an extended battery that easily gets through a 2 hour movie. I don't think it would make it on the smaller battery, though.
The screen is exceptionally bright when used indoors, and pretty lousy outdoors, so I usually have my airplane window shut. The main problem is PocketPC 2002 with its old Windows Media Player--the video studders a little about once every 2 seconds, even on very low bitrate movies. I've been told Windows Mobile 2003 would take care of this. I've also been told that using Pocket DivX is much smoother, but all my videos are in WMA format.
Honestly I think I've just given up watching DVDs on this phone ever since I read this last week about smooth 640x480 support!
Too bad there's not another site with lots of 7135 users that we I know of . . . c'mon, Kyo people!! I can handle the Treo winning, but not an i700. LOL
Oh and John, I also disagree about PDA's replacing laptops - that won't ever happen completely. I think having a PDA and a notebook is a great combination. Even with something like ThunderHawk, apps on a 3" screen can't compare with my 13.3". Not to mention a full-size keyboard, DVD/CD-RW drive, USB ports . . .
This topic sure has been fun. What comes next, Mike? Will the voting close or something? More rounds?
Right on Harmony. Given that pda's will not replace laptops (btw check out the ibm thinkpad x40 for a light and thin) then small is beautiful, which brings us back to the I500--great phone, full palm (better than MS pda), uses grafitti that can be written without looking at the device (I've done it) and does the net with great speed--but most of all, it is so small and thin it can always be with you and only you will know.
laptops will be replaced with converged devices... the next generation that comes around will want portability and a smaller sizer than luggin around a laptop. it will happen...
OK,
So this poll gives a pretty good idea of user base. I am suprised as many people use the i500 as polled.
Does anyone expect a poll like this to actually do anything other than count the registered users who own what phone. I doubt seriously that very many people who own the i700 wouldn't trade it for a Treo or an i500. I also know personally folks who have switched from the i500 to the Treo and back. I don't think this poll has really accomplished much other than friendly converstation.
Umm, 160 to 270!! hanging chads again!! It was not me-- I used a touch screen machine-- my i700 does not have a keyboard!!!- source of hanging chads!!!.
