March Madness - pdaPhone Style!
Convergent
04-05-2004
OK, while I've been glued to the tube watching some great NCAA men's college hoop, a different "March Madness" has quietly been taking place over at CNet. They have developed an interesting way to vote for your favorite...

I don't have any problems putting the 7135 in my pocket, but then again, I quit wearing the "grape huggers" when they...wait, this is a family forum. Let's just say I've moved on from the 80s and leave it at that.
I love this! Of course, it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt. ha ha

Again, more ammo for why the 7135 is better. Reading your comments (or actually just twisting them for my own benefit of course), proves to us who are enlightened that you can't just carry the i500 since there's no expansion, and you can't just carry the i600 since it's MS. Oh well, we'll all pray for your enlightenment. That's me talkin' trash.
That's not voting, that's called "conceding defeat". MS thinks that they'll always win; I'm not too sure that they won't in the end though. (shhh...I've been following another forum here on pdaphonehome that isn't Palm..who knows what'll happen). Of course, if that i550 ever comes out, LOOK OUT!
i550....sounds familiar, oh I know, Samsung makes that phone. Samsung makes the best smartphones. Pick one, i5, i6, or i7 and i'm sure you'll be happy with one of them, not to mention the phones that will be released in the future. I think that with their future releases, Samsung will become the top smartphone provider worldwide. Smartphones are supposed to be converged devices...not bricks with exploding batteries.
The weight thing and the 7135? Alright, I'll give you that one when comparing it to the i500; that one's pretty cut and dry. The exploding batteries? I've had a 7135 for well over a year now and have yet to see it or hear of someone first hand. I know it must have happened, don't get me wrong. But how many total 7135 owners had batteries "explode"? We'll probably never know, but I CAN tell you one thing: How many i500's are without an expansion slot? Yep, you guessed it, all of them. Anyway, how can anyone call the i500 a "converged device". What devices has it converged? How many mp3's can you load on it? Oh yeah, about 3 if you have any extra programs on it. And I absolutely love it when people say "well, I don't care about mp3's anyway, so that doesn't matter to me..." Uh huh, that's why i5 users carry an iPod with them at the same time. How many pictures can you load on an i5? Well, if you loaded the rocking 12 minutes of mp3's on it, maybe 2; that should leave you with just about enought room to play the 1 extra game that can be loaded on it. Wait, I forgot, i5 users don't care about playing games either. I mean, if REALLY want to play games, I can buy a small Gameboy or something, right? And backing up your data so you don't have to be near your laptop or desktop all the time in case something happens? Yeah, you're right, that's overrated too. So, let's recap here on what a "converged" device really is:
Without expansion, the musical part of the "converged device" is severely limited. Without expansion, the virtual wallet of kids, vacations, etc. is even more severely limited. Without expansion, the number of extra 3rd party applications is pretty limited (not severely though, I admit)...we all know how award-winning the programs preloaded on our devices are, so we shouldn't NEED 3rd party apps, right?
Bottom line on the i5 is that it IS a smaller device that runs the same OS as the bulkier 7135, but it is EXTREMELY crippled for any real "convergent"-type of use due to no expansion. Add an expansion, and you've got yourself a 7135 killer maybe, I'll admit. But the fact of the matter is that the i5 is nothing more than a pretty, neutered, "I desparately wanna be a convergent device" piece of...Sprint PCS hype.
Who's next? (ha ha)
I'm not really too sure how much I've got left in me here; I've been pretty busy trash-talkin'!

the convergence part is the melding of a pda and a cell phone. Hence the term pdaphone. Personally there are much better products out there for taking pictures and listening to music. Converging those items into a smartphone makes me think of one word, compromise. The amount of music you can fit on even the largest flash card is minimal unless you want to pay out the wazoo for 1gb card. And then you're at the point where you'd pay the same for a 20gb player (not the iPod. It's ignorant people (not trying to imply anything, really. ignorant just means uninformed and unaware) that associate an MP3 player with an iPod. There are many more choices out there. Not all are sheep). The only way you can fit any sort of volume of music on those tiny little flash cards is to use a very low bitrate when converting over your music. So combine the low level of music quality on top of an underpowered headphone amp and circuitry and software that was geared towards a pdaphone first and you get crappy music played out of cheap cans. The only time that is somewhat satisfactory is if i'm working out and I'm not overly concerned with the sound quality. Then again, the last thing I'm putting on my belt as I go for a run is a $700 hunk of a smartphone that is put at an increassed risk of damage.
As far as pics, you can store quite a few pics on the I5. It's not a hi res screen so I don't need to save hi res pics on it. They dummy down and quite a fewcan fit on there on top of the cache from my two web browsers and 15 other programs I have loaded on there with more than 8MBs to spare.
As I stated above, the original point of convergence was the merging of the PDA and the mobile phone. Not a pda, mobile phone, low quality MP3 player and low quality camera that only feels normal hanging on my belt if I'm 6'7". I only want the frills if they can be done properly without compromise.
And for all the iPod comments. You don't even own one and it's the only MP3 player on your brain. They obviously did something right in their marketing scheme if they have that word rolling off your tongue like people used to ask for a Kleenex when they wanted a tissue. Which you need because your nose is probably the only thing running in that head of yours bringing all the trashing and bashing into this thread.
I've got 5 gigs of high quality music on my Rio Karma (a Digital Audio Player, not an MP3 player) with 13 more gigs to fill. It has some of the best sound quality, the most useful eq and the most powerful headphone amp out of any DAP on the market. When I want to listen to music, I don't settle like you.
Besides, what's that I see, over there on the horizon, not too far off in the distance.......oh, it's the Samsung I550. And what is that I see over there from Kyocera to ease the scoliosis you've developed from carrying that monster on your hip? oh it's nothing.
Not every user wants an all in one device that makes compromises in it's functionality. I wanted the best combination of a pda and phone in the smallest case possible. I and many others have found that in the I5.
OK guys... I think that's a personal foul... 2 shots. Just not sure who fouled who???
Convergence is many things to many people. Like it or not, we are going to get all of that stuff in one device in the near future. I wish you all could have heard the VP from TI talk at CTIA. They make the integrated processors that go in many of these devices, and he said that within 2004 we'd see mobile phones that had 4Megapixel still and video cameras, and high quality audio. I'm sure it may not be as good as the individual components, but we will see very soon devices that the majority will be happy to use... and convenience is going to get weighed against the difference in quality.
But, THIS contest we are having here is about what exists today. Not everyone is going to agree here, and that's OK. Many great devices on the market that have different tradeoffs.
Woops, guess so. I said there's always that one who takes stuff too personally, and I guess I found that one. Sorry about that, but I figured they'd come out sooner or later. Like I said in almost all of my posts, this is all in fun. Sorry to actually offend anyone with the poking fun. Trash talkin' done now. We can all go back to our black and white time now. It was fun though, wasn't it? Thanks to all those trading the fun back and forth with me. To those who were offended, sorry, but c'mon, getting offended by trash-talking about a piece of...whatever you want to call these things? Sad. Anyway, thanks again to those who took the ride with me.
I should probably add that I do understand that each device is for a specific type of user, and thankfully, that's why we are starting to get such a diverse group of these "converged" devices, smartphones, or whatever moniker you feel warm and fuzzy about giving these things. I can't wait to see what's next. I agree with ALMOST every comment during this little fun, since each is geared towards a different user. I am very well aware of the shortcomings of my 7135, as well as many of the benefits and shortcomings of many of the other devices. Oh well, the fun must stop sometime I guess, and it looks like the ride has come to a stop. Please exit to your right, and we thank you for flying PDAPHONEHOME.COM. Come again soon.

One liners and such to me are the fun banter. It takes time to actually write a whole paragraph, so I just thought i'd write one back. No harm no foul. And trust me, you'd be hard pressed to find in my 500 plus posts just one that's mean spirited. All in all, it's just words so it's not like you can see the sarcastic grin on one's face when typing...haha.
And yes, each has it's pros and cons. If we all didn't have personal preferences then we wouldn't need to have that long list to vote from at the top. Even when we have the best of everything in one unit, it's still not going to appeal to everyone.
So Mike, will this be followed by the Elite 8 or what?
Since it was said that trash-talking was allowed . . .
And everybody, would you forget the exploding batteries thing?? That's just trying to take a cheap shot at a great device here - I mean, what, 4 exploded? 1 person got injured? OK, maybe couple more, I could be wrong - out of how many THOUSANDS of Kyo's sold? Give me a break. You act like we all have timebombs strapped to our belts.

Even so, the i500 is an awesome convergent device without an expansion slot, if it had an expansion slot, and a speakerphone, with external caller ID also, we wouldn't even need a forum for the best phone, that would be the best.
Um, rchapa32 . . . you just described a 7135. So it's thicker - it's really not that bad. Yes, I'd like thinner, but I'm fine with the Kyo. But then you say "Kyocera could learn a lot from Samsung" - yet they added all the features you wished for, and their model came out first?? Who's learning from who? I agree Samsung makes some good ones - but they take even longer than Kyocera to come out.
If Georgia Tech can't win, at least my phone can. GO KYOCERA!!!! C'mon everybody, let's hear it for the 7135! Rah-rah-rah!!
Put in a vote for my SX56. For me it's the best one-does all I need it to and it's working fine. Guess that's the ultimate answer-whatever works for you individually.
My boss' boss has a Kyo 7135. He thought he was cool, with his pdaphone. Then he saw my Treo 600, and his face went like this:
then this:
and finally this:
Maybe its the brighter screen, maybe its the keypad (and therefore the one-handed, no stylus usin' coolness), or maybe it's just its stylish good looks, but he turned green with envy.
For me, there's no better pda-phone-camera-mp3player on the market...yet.
yeah they can if someone has more than one username on the site... OR if they get a bunch of people to sign up to vote.. but thats a little overkill imo..

Yeah, last night when I went to bed at almost midnight EST the i700 was around 150, then when I got on this morning around 6:45 it's up in the mid 230's.
