Skyfire Opens Beta for Their New Mobile Browser

Browsing on a Windows Mobile PDAPhone has never been a really fun experience, especially if you are browsing full sized websites. There have been a number of attempts to fix this... unfortunately Microsoft hasn't really made any substantive improvements to their Pocket Internet Explorer in about five years since it first came out, so another new player enters the race by opening a free public beta of their Skyfire Browser for Windows Mobile and Symbian. What does Skyfire offer?

Skyfire aims to deliver a good browsing experience to full-featured PC versions of your favorite websites. Skyfire claims speedy page loads, full audio, images and video. From Myspace, Facebook, YouTube to Hulu - the full web experienced on your phone. That is a big goal and would be great if it can deliver.

Unlike most other mobile browsers, Skyfire supports the desktop version of Adobe Flash applications so sites, including those that serve-up video and music, are rendered exactly as you would expect - just like your PC. You will instantly recognize the content, be familiar with the page layout -- which is not true for most mobile browsing experiences. They support all that's good about today's web - not just Flash, but also Silverlight, Ajax, QuickTime and more. And even better: Skyfire evolves with the newest capabilities without you having to do anything.

Not only do they deliver video and audio, we also deliver everything else you routinely do on the web. Get maps, check sport scores, view weather forecasts, read the news, check flights, and stay active on your favorite social networks. From the Top 10 of websites all the way down to the obscurest of pages - you'll do it all from your mobile phone just like you do on your PC.

Skyfire claims to be faster than any mobile web browser you've ever used. You'll load web pages as fast as your PC and eliminate the long delays and error messages you get with other mobile browsers. According to a bake-off by Laptop Magazine and Skyfire beat out the iPhone 3G.

Skyfire has a SuperBar to perform a search or enter a URL from a single field. They suggest the most commonly used search keywords as you type. The search results from Google and Yahoo and are presented in easy to read tabs for each category: web, images, and videos, and maps.

Skyfire has built in some handy features, and says they will be adding more as the beta develops. If you discover something on the web that you want to share, you can send it to your friends from Skyfire via a text message. If they find a mobile version of a site you are visiting, Skyfire lets you know - then you decide if you want the mobile or full website. Skyfire even renders iPhone specific web sites nicely.

You can run the Skyfire beta on your existing Windows Mobile (version 5 or 6) or newer Symbian Series 60 phones in a few steps... either over the air or through your PC. I really dislike Pocket Internet Explorer so I willd definitely be checking this out. One of the appeals to me of the iPhone is the web browsing, and this could be the ticket to get it on my Tilt. If you try it, please be sure to post your results in a reply here.

I installed the beta on my HTC Mogul with Sprint today. The browser is by far the best browser that I have used for Windows Mobile. I have to say that I have only really used Pocket Internet Explorer until today. I used Opera at one time but I didn't think it was too big of a difference from Pocket Internet Explorer (I could be wrong).

I believe that Skyfire is headed in the right direction. The software is definitely a beta version and has its glitches. Within the first few minutes of trying the browser, I quickly realized that if you try to access any website that has a pop-up on a normal PC browser, Skyfire basically freezes and forces you to close the program. I wasn't able to access a couple of websites because of this issue.

Overall, I think the browser is a product that has great potential. I had my first opportunity the other day to see how the iPhone's browser worked and I have to say that it was nothing but beautiful. I tried to access my college's website to view my grades through Skyfire but wasn't able to (pop-up). However, the iPhone didn't have an issue.

If Skyfire is able to get past its glitches, I would say that one of the weakest links for Windows Mobile (browser capabilities) just went away.

I use Skyfire if I want to look at a web site that has Flash, Silverlight, or complex Javascript. Basically everything works in Skyfire due to the proxy nature. It is also very fast.

I still prefer the Opera 9 Mobile Beta for general browsing. Everything is rendered locally, which means it can not handle the same amount of sites as Skyfire, but once it is loaded up a page browsing around is much nicer.

I also still use IE if I want just a quick look at a site that I know is mainly text.

I installed Skyfire and so far so good! I definitely like the zoom option. The one issue I'm having is with audio. When on YouTube, the videos play fine, i just can't hear anything! I have a Sprint Mogul with WM 6.1, btw.

so I downloaded it a couple of hours ago. I was messing around with it and found out that I too could not get sound on videos. also I couldn't some of skyfire's pages to load, like their support forum page. as far as speed comparison, I am a relative noob to ppc mobile web browsing. pie actually seems faster, bit that could be attributed to that pie loads mobile versions and I was going for full versions with SF. plus my connection may be a bit weak in this tin can that I work in.

Eh, it's OK.

Skyfire is OK. It is nice to have native Flash support and proper page rendering. However the page scrolling is slower than Opera Mini and PIE. Watching Youtube videos was OK, and sound played fine. However, the maximize video button didn't work, and I had to zoom in. Also, I don't like the fact that you have to authenticate to a server that renders pages for you. The fact that they're a proxy and they could potentially store your information when you log in a site scares me.

I think I'll just keep waiting for Opera 9.5 or Firefox Mobile.

Only in use for about 4 days now....and I love it. Just what I was looking for! Only complaint is that logging onto some websites that require a password, the password block won't pop up...you just get directed to a failed logon page with no opportunity to logon

Thumbs up Works for me! :-D

I had joined Skyfire back when they first announced they were doing a private Beta, so I signed up and had to wait until it was "my turn" to download it.

I couple of weeks ago I was notified that I was now able to download it so I did.

I must say I am impressed with how it renders the web pages, they look almost, if not exactly the same as they do on my desktop PC, and the Flash and Audio works perfectly!

I put it through a good test,...my myspace page (MySpace.com - ► HДШLЄYΤRØИΙΧ ◄ - 40 - Male - Ashaway, Rhode Island - www.myspace.com/hawleytronics) which is a DIV overlay with a Video Playlist playing music videos as well as a couple of Flash slideshows, so pretty media-rich! But Skyfire had no problems with rendering the DIV overlay in the correct position and also had no problems playing the Video and Audio.

It was like I shrunk my desktop computer into my phone!

My phone specs:
Treo 700Wx on Sprint EvDo network, Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
